Guy who wrote Deadwood is down $100,000,000, runs bad.

David Milch, the man behind groundbreaking television series like Deadwood and NYPD Blue, earned $100 million across his decades-long career in Hollywood, but, according to The Hollywood Reporter, nearly all of it has been consumed by bets at the racetrack. According to one lawsuit, Milch lost $25 million between 2000 and 2011 due to gambling alone. The lawsuit also reveals that he is now $17 million in debt. "He's in debt to the IRS," a friend said. "He's doing what he can, but it's hard for him and everyone close to him." Milch is currently on a $40 a week allowance from his wife, Rita.

Milch, who started off as a writer for Hill Street Blues before creating the boundary-pushing NYPD Blue and, later, the critically beloved Deadwood, has not worked on a show since 2012, when the horse-racing drama Luck was canceled (his other effort, the surfer mystery John From Cincinnati, was canceled after its first ten episodes in 2007). Milch currently maintains an exclusive deal with HBO that is in talks to be renewed. He is working on an adaptation of Peter Matthiessen's novel Shadow Country, which is set to star Jeff Bridges, and developing a movie version of Deadwood. Rita Milch has filed a legal complaint against their business managers for not informing her of the full extent of her husband's losses. She is seeking $25 million in damages.

    According to The Hollywood Reporter(THR):

But he continued to be regular at racetracks, a hobby which inspired his short-lived HBO series Luck.

"He was one of the most devoted gamblers," John Perrotta, an author and adviser on Luck, told THR. "He was very serious about it, and he was a very good handicapper."

I hate to be results orientated, but if he lost 8 figures at the track, he can't be that good a handicapper. I never saw the "Luck" series, but its based on Horse Racing, gambling etc.

The bad part about a guy like this is that a lot of people will give him a marker, regardless of his wife's $40 allowance.

I remember Milch as the guy who wrote NYPD Blue. Was a big fan of that show for the first 5 seasons. Then Ricky Schroeder came in, and things started to go downhill. I was done with it once Zack from Saved by the Bell came in with his huge cell phone.

Actually reminds me a lot of Terrence Watanabe of the Oriental Trading Company, who shot off $160 million of his inherited fortune at Caesars, plus owed tens of millions more which was eventually forgiven due to a dual-side lawsuit.

Regarding the race track, that has a bit of a different breed of gambler -- one who lives in quiet depression as they slowly financially bleed out. It differs from regular gambling in that those heavily involved tend to believe that they can honestly beat the odds through skill, and they tend to spend large amounts of time there. Traditional casino addicts spend less actual time in casinos (though they're also there a lot), plus they know deep down that the odds are against them.

I once heard a really interesting call about race track addiction from a woman who phoned an LA-area talk show. At one point, everything in her life looked great. She was around 30 years old, fairly hot, and couldn't lose at horse racing. As she kept finding success day after day, she pressed her bets higher and higher, and kept winning. She was eventually invited as a guest handicapper in the "Betting with Janice" section of the LA Times -- a big honor in the '80s and early '90s. She was married throughout this. Her husband wasn't thrilled about the gambling and all the time she spent at the track, but she was winning, so he didn't complain. At one point she was up about a million dollars.

Then the losing started. And once it started, it didn't stop. She started chunking off money at a high rate, and all of a sudden the fun was gone. In order to console herself, she gorged herself on hot dogs and other junk at the track. She ballooned to over 200 pounds. Her husband was not aware of the losing, but also didn't complain about her weight. He even told her that he would love her no matter what size she was. That didn't console her, because she had the secret shame and pain of losing within. It didn't stop. She lost every penny of the million.

Then it was time to make a decision. Up until that point, she was only losing her original winnings. If she continued betting at the track, she would be dipping into the family's savings. She did it anyway. And you know what happened.

With the family being flat broke, and her husband not realizing yet, he came home one day and said he had good news. He said that he was tired of being a cheapskate and always depriving himself. He talked about buying a car he had always wanted, with a $30,000 price tag. This was something the family could have afforded before the money got lost, which he believed was still there.

At that point, she broke down and told him the truth that their money was all gone.

He didn't get angry. He didn't yell. He just turned around and walked out of the room. The next week, she received divorce papers.

There's no way to tell if this story is 100% true, as it came from the woman herself. But I believe it, and it's always stuck with me.

I think the Potato Famine showed that the "luck of the Irish" isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I've read that the expected house take on horse racing in the US is in the upper teens. Not surprising he shot it off if a true degen.

They were *unlucky* to be politically ass-fucked by the British for hundreds of years.
