    Poker in New Orleans

Heading to a conference in New Orleans, how is poker at Harrahs? Any other poker rooms?

I went to Harrahs maybe 5 years ago when I was down there during Mardi Gras for a friend’s bachelor party. Was sort of your standard 1/2 with maybe a 2/5 or two room. Like 6 or 7 tables going. Not going to blow your balls off but was decent enough to get me away from the madness for a few hours.

Hit the poker room at Harrahs this past week. Was definitely dominated by locals but an ok amount of tourists.

Only games running were $1/3 and $2/5 NLHE. I prefer limit but played $1/$3, max initial buyin was $300 min was $100, bought in for $100 and got up to $350 before mis reading a flop…did I mention the drinks in NO are strong…ha….thought I flopped 4 to the nut flush…not quite….shot off half the stack…oops.

Played about 3 hours until 1 am but had a conference the next morning…won $75, meh. Lot of people like to chase flushes.

Hit the room again at 4 pm a couple days later, saw several of the same people, do this dudes have jobs? There was a tourney starting with a fully paralyzed guy playing, no clue how that worked (does the dealer show him the cards?). Tourney was a $200 buyin with$50 bounty, only had 18 players which the dealer said was very low, usually get 40.

One guy I talked to was retired and living in the Dominican Republic, he was in the states to watch his son play football at Georgia Tech, he shot off about $800. So not everyone was a local degen.

One hand a German kid tourist asked a guy how many chips he had, other guy thought the kid checked and turn over 3 of a kind…oops…kid went all in and the other guy called….double oops…kid wasn’t bluffing and had the flush.

I won one hand hitting a 3rd jack on the turn and jamming my $100 after someone bet $15 with 3 callers before it got to me….everyone folded but rabbit hunted the river and a guy was pissed he would have hit a straight….never rabbit hunt.

Then I was super card dead for two hours…got big slick once which I dumped on the flop….finally get pocket aces and everyone folds to my pre flop raise….which is no surprise since I hadn’t played squat, made $15 whole bucks on that hand.

Only memorable hand I get Kh6h and call a $10 bet, flop comes King high with one heart, I call a $20 bet with top pair shit kicker back door flush…turn is another heart, hmmm…guy to my left bets, I call everyone else bails. River is the miracle Ah, I have the nuts….guy to my left bets $100, I raise all in for just a bit more since I had been so card dead.

He turns over Qh8h…so bad luck for him. He was glad my stack wasn’t bigger. I play another time around the table and bail to go meet some suppliers for dinner. Mr Bs Bistro, it was good but a bit overrated.

Overall NO was fun and I won a few hundred bucks, Casino was nice enough but I really only went since it was right across the street from my hotel. It’s being renovated so parts are closed off. I asked the refs if the Caesar’s rewards were good…they unanimously said they suck, I did not sign up as I live nowhere near a casino.
