Within the last 10 years, the Supreme Court, (Heller v Washington D.C.?) overturned the precedent set initially waaaaaay back in 1800s, allowing individuals for the first time to own almost any kind of firearm (automatic weapons still excluded). Because before that relatively recent SCOTUS ruling, the all important term "regulated militia" was interpreted to gave power to the various levels of governments (state, county, city, etc.) to restrict what kinds of guns could be owned by ordinary citizens.
And anyone who saw many Westerns, TV or movies, prolly remembers seeing situations where the local sheriff enforced weapons restrictions (e.g. turning in one's guns for safe-keeping while in town) to reduce the likelihood of rowdy types going off half-cocked in the middle lf a drinking spree. Gone are the days of frontier town wisdom applied to locales everywhere in the US with that ruling.
