FWIW - This guy is horrible at poker, stereotypical "chatty black guy" - also staked his buddies, most of them were awful as well.

    PS - I'm not racist.

I also witnessed this guy getting called out for collusion in 2 separate tournaments at casinos in NY. The tournaments were over a year apart and he was clearly colluding in both instances, but the TDs refused to do anything because he "has pull with the floor".

Travell Thomas pleads guilty in Federal Court over Debt Collection Company

Thomas pleaded guilty in Federal Court this morning to 2 Federal charges of Wire Fraud and Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud. He's the 11th person to face the Judge over Thomas' debt collection company which collected over $31M illegally in direct violation of the FDCA as well as several other criminal acts. Thomas will face sentencing in February in front of Judge Failla (no relation to Will the Thrill in case anybody's wondering)

Saw him on TV a few times and in poker rooms. Very brash and cocky guy. Poker attracts lots of these types.

    40 years for that?

    c'monnnnnnnn

    man1 gets you 25-life.

this guy didn't kill anyone, all he did was scam.

i'm not saying he should get less time, but sentencing laws are fucking redic sometimes.

what was he facing if he didn't plead out? that's what I wanna know.

    You misread it.

It was a 40-year maximum. He hasn't been sentenced yet. He will get much less.

I guess he's dropping his racism claim regarding being prosecuted.

Thomas, who lives in Orchard Park, a suburb of Buffalo, pocketed about $750,000 from the scheme — which he blew on gambling expenses, tickets for sporting events, his wedding reception, jewelry and cosmetic surgery for his wife, prosecutors said.

NEW YORK (AP) — One of the nation's top poker players blamed gambling for derailing his life on Thursday as he was sentenced to more than eight years in prison for a $31 million debt collection scam.

Travell Thomas, 38, a past winner of World Series of Poker tournaments, sobbed as he described how his gambling was "out of control" before he was criminally charged with running a Buffalo-based debt collection business that made false threats and representations to thousands of people nationwide from at least 2010 to 2015.

"I would spend days at the casinos," he told U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla. "I wouldn't even change my clothes."

Thomas, of Orchard Park, New York, said authorities "saved my life" when they told him he could no longer gamble.

"I didn't spend much time at the office. I spent most of my time gambling," he said before Failla announced that he must serve eight years and four months in prison, beginning in September.
    LOL at the bold
