Sadly, so many charities out there are shady or mired in bureaucracy.

So it's a pretty tough choice deciding where to send your money.

You can send it to a smaller one like the Jared Foundation and have it misappropriated/stolen, with no oversight at all.

Or you can send it to one of the big charities, where the money doesn't get outright stolen, but a healthy percentage gets lost in bureaucracy.

Scammers LOVE charities, because you aren't getting anything in return when you donate (so there's no sense of spending money and getting the short end of the stick for the victims), and because people feel good when they donate, so they often let their guard down.

"Donate to help get these sick kids in Africa the medical assistance they desperately need" will draw a lot less skepticism than "Invest in this revolutionary business idea and triple your money in 6 months!"

When I was a bit more naive, I used to wonder why pro athletes always seem to have their own charities. It seemed odd that so many of them would be passionate about some cause or another, especially given how narcissistic and sheltered athletes can be. And why go to the trouble of starting your own rather than just donating to another? Was it something the leagues encouraged them to do for PR?

Now, of course, the real reason is obvious.

Charity XYZ gives me an unsolicited phone call:

Charity call center worker: "Hoy, hoy, hoy! How are you doing, sir? Would you like to send your much appreciated pledge envelope to help sick kids in Africa today?"

Me: "I'd like to speak to your supervisor, please"

Charity call center supervisor: "Yes?"

Me: "What percentage of donation proceeds are kept for administrative expenses and won't directly support the intended recipients?"

Charity call center supervisor: "80 percent" (AFAIK, The charities are legally REQUIRED to tell you this over the phone)

Me: "Please place me on your do not call list."

Charity call center supervisor: "No problem, sir."
