In other words...Thank you for taking the time to participate in the “We the People” petition process. We launched this online tool as a way of hearing directly from you, and are pleased to see that it has been effective in soliciting your feedback. We understand your interest in the petition to support the legalization of online poker, and appreciate the opportunity to share President Obama’s concerns about this issue.
The Administration understands that many Americans engage in paid online poker games for entertainment purposes. Online gambling on sporting events or contests violates federal law. The legality of other forms of online gambling is dependent upon the law of the states where the bettor or gambling business is located. It is left to each state to determine whether it wishes to permit such activity between its residents and an online poker business authorized by that state to accept such wagers, but online gambling that is not authorized by state law may also violate federal statutes.
The rapid and anonymous nature of the internet distinguishes online games from onsite games, such as those in casinos, and creates distinct challenges. For example, there are many means of technologically circumventing restrictions on online gambling that can allow individuals from countries where gambling is illegal — or even minors — to play using real currency. Online games also have greater potential for fraud because gambling websites are much cheaper and easier to establish than on-site locations, and like telemarketing scams, can appear and disappear overnight. Finally, online gambling can be used in money laundering schemes because of the volume, speed, anonymity, and international reach made possible by internet transactions. The Administration will continue to examine this issue and is open to solutions that would help guard against the use of online gambling sites as tools for conducting illegal activities or preying on unsuspecting individuals to the extent that online gambling is permitted.
Thank you once again for signing the online petition. We appreciate hearing your opinions and look forward to hearing from you again soon.
PPA with another huge success story under its belt.
Who remembers when the PPA bribed members to sign an earlier White House petition? They offered a ticket to a Pokerstars freeroll to all that signed.
Yeah, that was a great way to be taken seriously by the White House -- submitting a petition where you bought the signatures.
When is the next basement message from John Pappas?
I don't think Americans realize this issue is going to take some serious time in the US. Gambling has a really bad stigma here and has been outlawed in so many ways over the years. No politician (unless they are in the most absolutely safe district in the country *Barney Frank* *Joe Barton*) is going to make online poker an issue. And even the ones who have, have only done so because their pockets were lined by the PPA.
Obama's position that it's a State Rights issue is light years better than Romneys, but way behind what poker players want. Now, if Congress somehow passed an online poker bill I think Obama would insta-sign it, but he is never going to come out in favor of gambling, especially during an election year.
I have the over/under on a Federal online poker bill (or a state pool like Powerball) in 2015.

Welcome to what medical marijuana people deal with on a daily basis...
Years of science finally proving medicinal properties in herb, but whenever these petition things come up, they basically give us some long winded denial response like you just received.
Let's not forget we had Prohibition for 13 years in this country! The problem is the opponents of these things (gambling and pot) are extremely vocal whiled the advocates are at best a hodgepodge of degenerate slackers. And 75% of the country doesn't care enough to make online poker or medicinal marijuana a major issue so the opponents always win, just like in the case of gay marriage

Light years? How soon you forget that it was Barack Obama's DOJ that dismantled online poker in the US.
So you have Romney who has come out against online gaming and Obama who actually destroyed it.
Now the Obama administration issues an online statement saying some forms of online gaming regulation is best left for states to decide. Is Obama 'evolving' on this issue too? It's an obvious political ploy to have it both ways.
Pure hypocrisy, which is expressed in Avon Barksdale's excellent point here:
The Government (GOP and Dems both guilty) spew specious excuses about online poker, marijuana use and other activities Americans should be able to decide on their own.
Penn Jillette takes Obama to 'Sunday School' about his 'states' rights' bullshit.
Why do you always try to twist things and put words in people's mouth??? I said his stance (from the letter) is light year's ahead of Romney's. What he does is a separate arguement, AND the DOJ has been working on online poker before Obama was even in office. Do you really think he was consulted before they took down Stars and Tilt --fuck, he still might not even know

I'm not being trite when I say words have meaning. You said "Obama's position that it's a State Rights issue is light years better than Romneys". I didn't twist anything. I simply pointed out how absurd that comment was in light of the fact that Obama destroyed online poker. I continued by explaining how meaningless the recent Obama administration's online remarks about states' rights were.
Do I think the Attorney General, Eric Holder, discussed going after major online poker sites with his boss? Are you serious? Of course he did. Obviously President Obama gave Holder the OK to destroy online poker. If you doubt that, you're naive.
Actually for years and years there has been a very vocal group of people, mainly in law enforcement, that say well, we should not allow marijuana because it has no redeeming qualities. It is only for people that want to get stoned.
Now first off they are ignoring how useful hemp can be but for the sake of this argument we will just skip over that as well. The real point is studies started coming back about how effective medical marijuana is in treating chemotherapy sickness; AIDS patients and cancer patients would use it to relieve pain and eat. Eat you say? Anyone can eat, right? Wrong, when my grandma got cancer she just did not feel like eating and she lost a lot of weight. We put her on a cannabis light diet and the weed would trigger her appetite so she started eating regularly again. Between the morphine and all of the other drugs, not eating was actually a common side effect and having something that can trigger the munchies is surprisingly a great way to ensure that sick people eat enough food.
Of course now that all of this evidence and scientific analysis of cannabis is coming out favoring the legalization camp's argument for medical marijuana, the prohibition happy camp says, "Oh, well now you're just doing it as a front to allow people to smoke pot recreationally so we can't take your movement seriously."
And honestly, to that I say, what would be so bad about people legally smoking pot recreationally? Why is it fine for someone to sit at home and drink alcohol and go out and drink alcohol but god forbid someone light up a joint? What is the big fucking deal with weed that we can need to lock people up for it? Seriously? Do you consider that protecting the public safety when you have a non-violent drug offender sitting in jail? What are we protecting the public from? Seems to me that in a free country I should be free to put whatever I want into my own body.
It looks like a copout. If mm has redeeming clinical characteristics then it should be legal for medical purposes, period. The people that want to get stoned are going to get stoned whether or not it is legal for medicinal use anyways.
Actually it's because that drugs are a huge money maker for law enforcement: http://truth-out.org/news/item/8854-...ijuana-illegal
That is an awesome article if anyone gets a chance to peek at it. Very telling about who actually owns your soul.Top Five Special Interest Groups Lobbying to Keep Marijuana Illegal
1.) Police Unions
2.) Private Prisons Corporations
3.) Alcohol and Beer Companies
4.) Pharmaceutical Corporations
5.) Prison Guard Unions
Oh no doubt, but the doublespeak works both ways. They would never say that the real reason they want weed to remain illegal is to save their jobs. No, they want to create criminals so that their salaries get paid.
Imagine how much money we could spend on getting rid of real crime if there was no DEA/Vice units/DEU etc across America. The problem is that those real criminals are scary. Go out and work the streets looking for murderers, rapists, armed robbers? Fuck that, we can just storm some 18 year old with 20 cops for buying an 8th in the park. Everyone looks busy but most importantly everyone gets paid, hopefully some overtime.
The war on drugs is the biggest fucking racket in America.
