Under the terms of the sentence, Ravi will also receive three years of probation, 300 hours of community service and $12,000 fines.

OK, now this is looking a bit more like justice.

Seems pretty fair to me. He didn't kill anyone.

With the additional details, sure. 30 days alone would have been a complete joke though.

There are only crimes; there is no such thing as "hate crimes."

    Fair sentence.

An important paragraph from the article:

The New York Times reports that in the weeks leading up to Monday's hearing, a growing number of gay-rights advocates began calling for a lenient sentence for Ravi, arguing that a lengthy prison term would be both unfair to Ravi and risk prompting an anti-gay backlash.
So even gay rights groups realized that this was a media frenzy and that this kid was being vilified as much worse than he actually was.

The important thing to realize here is that the only crime that occurred here was broadcasting his roommate on the internet. Setting up a hidden camera in your own residence is not a crime. For example, if Ravi was concerned that his roommate was stealing from him, it would be perfectly legal for him to set up a hidden camera and watch it later.

The suicide also has nothing to do with the legal part of this case. Ravi was never charged in any part of his roommate's death. He never encouraged his roommate to kill himself. Did he do something shitty that caused his roommate to get depressed and kill himself? Probably. But a lot of suicides happen because people do shitty (but legal) things to each other. If a dude's girlfriend cheats on him, he finds out, and he subsequently takes a gun to his head because of being so despondent, should she be charged with a crime? Obviously not. Therefore, while the story is tragic, you cannot increase Ravi's sentence because he "caused" a suicide. Doing so would be a complete miscarriage of justice, and would open up a huge can of worms regarding actions "causing" people to kill themselves.

There also wasn't any intimidation. Ravi wasn't threatening his roommate at all. He wasn't videotaping him to force him to move. He wasn't doing it with intent to cause harm. He was doing it, for lack of better words, for internet lulz. Like many 19-year-old dudes, he was disgusted at the thought of his roommate having gay sex in the smal space they both lived, so he took out his frustration by setting up a camera and tweeting about it to his internet friends. Insensitive? Yes. Intrusive? Yes. Invasive? Yes. Immature? Yes. But he wasn't doing it to intimidate.

The bottom line is that, in order to give a fair sentence here, you need to ask yourself this:

"Say Ravi secretly videotaped his heterosexual male roommate having sex, and broadcasted it on the internet. Say that roommate was pissed off and embarrassed, but did not kill himself or harm himself in any way. What would you say would be the appropriate punishment?"

I would say that getting kicked out of school, a short county jail sentence, and a fine would be appropriate.

Random? You don't see how what I said applies here? That's weird.

Not that it doesn't apply just that it wasn't said anywhere in this thread until you said it. I can see if I bitched about a hate crime aspect being ignored or something but I didn't. So maybe not random, just pointless.
