Local news is saying its been put out. Palm trees and cabanas are what burned up for the most part. I saw a video on CNN that a witness shot on his cell... Looked like a lot of transformers burned up as well.

CMONEY be careful when you throw your cigarette out the window.A "ridiculously fast"-spreading fire at the Bamboo Pool at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas early this afternoon clouded the Las Vegas Strip with plumes of smoke, sent at least one person to the hospital and for a time caused closure of a main portion of the Las Vegas Strip.
A witness who was on the Bamboo Pool deck during the blaze told the Sun that employees think the fire was started by a cigarette tossed from one of the hotel's top floors, or possibly discarded by a guest at the pool, into a bush on the pool deck.
The witness said the fire consumed half the cabanas around the pool in less than a minute. Guests were running and screaming as the fire spread "ridiculously fast," and the entire pool deck area was quickly evacuated.
The Bamboo Pool is one of three pools listed on the Cosmopolitan's website. The Bamboo Pool, the site says, is the "ultimate Las Vegas relaxation pool" in a "soothing environment with a private canyon-like feel." The hotel's other pools are the Marquee Day Club Pool and the Boulevard Pool, scene of big-name concert acts.

Does Planet Hollywood overlook the Cosmopolitan pool? I also remember looking at a hotel with balconies and someone at the pool said Vegas discourages hotels with balconies, because when someone loses huge there is the potential for that loser to jump, and a couple people did a nosedive after huge losses.
I also got the best Bloody Mary at Planet Hollywood at the main bar. Big fat guy made it. He said he learned long ago that customers come back when you make an outstanding Bloody Mary.

Yes, Cosmo has balconies, and yes, most other casinos don't because of the reasons you mentioned. I was actually just in one of the rooms at Cosmo for the first time last week, top floor. There's no guarding anyone from taking the leap. If they want to they can. In reality though, it's not tough for someone to jump off a parking garage or something else here. I guess the worst part about the Cosmo balconies is if someone wants to do it they can instantly and don't have the time to come to their senses, as opposed to someone having to walk to the top of a garage.
