    Things to do in Portland...?

    Just moved here.

Like it so far aside from the unusual heat wave this past weekend. Sucks moving in when its 99 outside.

Went to a Timbers game; that was great. However, the area is really big to me and I've not really found any good restaurants / spots yet.

I think that some PFA'ers have lived or spent time in Portland. What are some good spots / trails / breweries / etc.?

Oregon fucking sucks across the board

other than the amazing coastline in the southern part of the state

I guess if you love cloudy, shitty and cold weather 300 days a year it's awesome

some of the worst Nazi motherfucker cops in the nation as well

its basically the west coast version of Mississippi with worse weather

the only good news is at least you live in Portland and not some fuckbag podunk shithole town on the coast

not sure why you decided to move there, but I would urge you to relocate before you reach a suicidal state from lack of sun

foodtruck scene is off the chain.

there is also a very famous thai restaurant the size of a shack there run by a white dude who spent years in chiang ma studying royal/rural thai cuisine. the name escapes me but it shouldnt take more than 30 seconds on google to find.

i was there for the steelhead/salmon fishing so i cant really go further than that for layover style entertainment.

Thats Pok Pok on division. Awesome place to eat. Burnside brewing is probably my fave brewery, but there's so many its hard to narrow it down. Cascade Barrel House is great as well.

Sonatine is right about the food carts, there's a ton of pods throughout the city, and generally you wont go wrong with 90% of them.

For trails start off with any of the multitude of hikes just east of town along the Columbia on the way to/just after Multnomah Falls.

Oh and Sloppy Joe, this weekend was somewhat normal for a brief spurt in July/August. Luckily you missed the very not normal final 2 weeks of June this year that were 90+ every day.

Yeah if youre into the nature scene, I spent a solid 10-20 hours a week wandering around/fishing in Oxbow Park and I dont think it was less than jaw dropping on so much as a single occasion.

This is from my first trip to Oxbow actually:

I really did like everything about Oregon aside from the Nazi mentality of the cops, and the terrible weather

Been to some incredible beaches all over the world in my life, but have to give southern Oregon major props for some of the most raw, pristine, and unspoiled coastline I've ever seen

took plenty of pics and made a ton of videos...here are a few

that spot is at the very end of the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area near Winchester Bay.....the coastline stretches south for almost 30 miles

Winnie and I had some pretty epic hikes along that stretch of coastline.

these pics are actually for Tine since he specifically mentioned the food-truck scene

I will actually be in Portland shortly, as well, so I am curious about the content of this thread.

Marty, where on the coast were those pics taken? Northern state or southern state?

Sloppy Joe, while these aren't right by Portland, there are various land features/sights within reasonable driving distance from you:

    - Crater Lake (between Grants Pass and Bend)
    - Newberry Volcanic Monument (Bend)
    - Mt. St. Helens (Washington)
    - Mt. Rainier (Washington)

oregon does a shit job of advertising their state, imo

the beach is the last thing i would think of if you asked me to describe oregon, or my impression of oregon (i've never been there, btw)

that beachfront is beautiful, but as far as my perception of what oregon is, it doesn't even register, almost as if it was landlocked

    maybe it's just me

all those videos and pics were taken/filmed at the Oregon National Dunes Recreation Area....just south of Winchester Bay....about 25 miles north of Coos Bay

basically 50 miles north of the California border

Okay, I might go by there, then. Was going to go directly from Crescent City to Grants Pass, but might take a detour there.

If you're driving up 101, you can't miss it

You're definitely going to be there at the right time of the year with the best possible chance of decent weather

Not even exaggerating when I say that in the year I spent in Oregon.....no less than 300 out of 365 days were cloudy and gray.

If the sun came out more than it does, the entire region would be a lot more than a haven for senior citizens.

The coastline stretches for miles and miles towards Coos Bay. The dunes recreation area in Winchester Bay near the RV landing is literally the final stop

Pretty sure it was in late May when Winnie and I hiked 8 miles down the coast before I had second thoughts, and headed back because I wasn't prepared for another 17-20 mile one way trip with no food and very little fresh water for her

It rained almost the entire way back. Still a memorable journey.

a few more pics near the dunes

Todd, if you do happen to make a pit stop in Winchester Bay...

I strongly recommend stopping for lunch at Unger's Fish and Chips

Looks nice, but I just looked at the map and sadly there is no way to cut across to the east to get to Grants Pass.

So I guess it will be through the hills I go.

why not just ride the coastal highway up 101 instead of going through the hills ?

you'll be missing out on a spectacular drive. Grants Pass is nothing special

I cut over east just past Red Bluff on (I-5) and took highway 36 through the Trinity mountains and the Redwoods which took me to 101

    well worth the detour

probably not a good idea considering the fact I've been rather (ahem) 'vocal' about my experience with the local police department in Podunk, Oregon since heading to Mexico

don't think I'm exactly welcome in the state of Oregon for a while

    just a hunch

Im sure the Podunk Oregon police are monitoring PFA
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?
