ok so i did a little reading on this and it looks the existing national emergencies have been about totally non-controversial things. congress is required to meet every 6 months to consider whether to terminate them, but never has cause they are so irrelevant.
this looks like it would be the first time a national emergency would be declared that people care about.
the reason presidents don't always do this whenever they don't get their way is the whole "we're a nation of laws and not a dictatorship" thing.
if president trump uses a national emergency in this fashion, what exactly stops a democratic president from doing it?
this reminds me of when mitch McConnell told harry reid that democrats would rue the day they abolished the filibuster for certain presidential nominations. mitch was right.
