Reading this book in my late teens inspired me to buy a motorcycle, drop out of school, and drive cross country on it. And doing so helped to get me out of my comfort zone about what was possible for me in life.

Imagine teaching college juniors and seniors in the early 2000s and seeing the blank expressions on their faces when mentioning something about the Vietnam War in the course of a lecture. Heck! None of those little shots were even *born* before "Deer Hunter" brilliantly splashed acrossed movie theatre screens. It was enough to consider taking up a new career.Quote:
