Mike has made a lot of mistakes in life, but he's actually a likable guy with a big heart.

I personally know of perpetually broke poker players who Mike put into games and tournaments just because he wanted to help them out.

I went to dinner with him and a large group of people in 2005, and he insisted upon paying for everyone's bill.

From everything I've heard, he's always been very loyal to his friends.

In 2006, he noticed my parents were watching me playing a WSOP event from the rail, and he made it a point to come up to them and rave about what a great player he thought I was. While Mike probably legitimately thought I was a good player (we had played a lot on Stars), he was clearly exaggerating how great he thought I was, so my parents would feel good.

He also has a generally down-to-earth demeanor, despite his brashness and outspokenness. Never I have gotten the "arrogant" vibe from Mike.

I hope he does well this year -- as long as he's not up against me.
