Such a large physical difference between Orr and Ocasek. One had male model looks and the other was gangley and ugly, but they made great music together. Now they're both gone.

Brenda K. Starr was born Brenda Kaplan, and was half-Jewish and half Puerto Rican. She goes by stage name "Brenda K. Starr", with the K standing for her real last name.
In 1987, at the age of 20, she released her only hit song, I Still Believe, which actually holds up pretty well today.

Brenda was attractive, and seemed to have a long career ahead of her. However, she failed to score another hit after that, and eventually transferred over to salsa music, where she remains today at age 52.
However, her biggest contribution to popular music had nothing to do with any of her songs. In 1988, she had an 18-year-old backup singer named Mariah Carey. Mariah had aspirations to be far more than a backup singer, but didn't really have a way to expose her music to anyone influential. As she developed a friendship with Brenda, Mariah was invited to an industry party, where she handed a demo tape to producer Tommy Mottola. Not only did Mottola like the tape and quickly sign her, he eventually married her, as well.
Without Brenda K. Starr, you'd have never heard the music of Mariah Carey.
Mariah did a tribute to Brenda in 1998, by covering "I Still Believe".
