the republican party = donald trump. even supposed non-maga guys love trump because liberals hate him.
if he wants to run in 2024, he's the candidate. if he wants it to be don jr., then it will be him.
the RNC literally deleted their policy platform to instead just say they support whatever trump wants.
that actually happened.
meanwhile, centrist democrats might be closer to republicans than the AOC wing.
that being said, the current problem for republicans is that trump is not going away. even from his jail cell he will be the kingmaker in 2024. if trump somehow isn't in jail and runs, the left will be fully unified against him just like in 2020. if it's don jr., the result will be the same.
i don't think this aged very well.
in fact, i now think trump set the republican party back 50 years, thereby totally fucking up the country because balance would be a good thing. no trump has any chance of ever holding office again.
if trump wasn't such a lunatic, we wouldn't have seen this kind of backlash from democrats and never-trumpers. trump's complaining that the election was rigged -- and the justified backlash to it -- was so bad that it led to widespread censorship of conservatives on social media, a liberal wet dream.
trump has also dumb downed the republican party beyond all recognition. only 19% of republicans believe biden legitimately won the election, and we have actual QAnon people holding elected office. QAnon is so prominent in the relublican party that other republican congressman are now doing op ed's talking about how republicans need to disavow them.
this type of damage will take a while to fix and there's just no correlation to it on the democrat side.
