Usually I'm not a fan of desertrunner's posts like this, but this particular situation is really egregious, both in the crime itself and the media's lack of coverage.
Iryna Zaruktska was a white 23-year-old refugee from Ukraine.
She was sitting on a bus in Charlotte by herself, on the way to work at a pizza place.
Decarlos Brown, the killer, is a 34-year-old black man with an incredibly long rap sheet.
He has been arrested 14 times in the past:
No reporting on this from CNN, MSNBC, NPR, Reuters, WaPo, or AP. Not a word.
Do you think they'd be reporting this if the races were reversed?
You can't even say this is being avoided by national mainstream media because it's an uninteresting local murder. This was a brazen, random killing of a young, pretty white woman on a public bus on the way to work. On top of that, she was a Ukranian refugee, who came to the US to escape the violence there! The media would normally LOVE a story like this, but they are avoiding it because the suspect is black and looks like the stereotypical "thug", so they're afraid it will reinforce racist stereotypes.
They're also worried that his 14 past arrests would spur people to demand a return to tougher sentencing for repeat offenders.
Thus, their solution is simply to avoid covering this senseless murder.

you are aware that most reputable publications would publish these as allegations first right, which means yes they would list him as the suspect- part of due process - also if they list him as the killer before he is convicted that could sway public opinion which in turn would give his lawyers cause to argue an unfair trial. Oh but he's on video you say - great that should make conviction easy but in the eyes of the law you are presumed innocent until found guilty. Remember the murder of the two girls in Indiana on that bridge? The Wikipedia page named several men suspected of it, and explained why they were ultimately not arrested (even though not all of them were fully cleared, either). This was before they found and arrested the actual killer, who wasn't a suspect for years due to police error.
This was allowed because there was no political element to that case. The girls were white, and the potential suspects (and ultimately the actual killer) were also all white.
News outlets will always name the suspect once identified by police. That has been the journalistic standard since before any of us were born.
Also, I have used the term thug in the past to describe anyone who looks and acts that way. I have applied it to people of all races, including white guys.

I hope the focus doesn't go into the weeds regarding race, and instead is directed at areas where I'd believe most Americans would agree:
1) The media needs to stop suppressing stories they feel will lead us to wrongthink. Report the fucking news, and stop being a gatekeeper regarding what reactions we might have. It's a form of thought policing, and it's the opposite of living in a free society. The people should demand a full and honest assessment of what happened regarding the lack of coverage here (until it became too huge to ignore), from all the major outlets which suppressed this.
2) We need to agree that "restorative justice" and other woke crime-and-punishment reform has been a huge failure. It must be examined why this man was roaming free, given his 14 prior arrests, and we must put an end to all lenient sentencing of violent criminals, regardless of the color of their skin.
3) The magistrate judge who likely sentenced him to her own crime rehabilitative center needs to be investigated and prosecuted, if this is true.
4) All states allowing magistrate judges without a law degree should immediately cease doing so.
5) There needs to be a comprehensive investigation as to why certain blue cities are reporting record-low crime in 2025, while their police departments all say otherwise. It shouldn't be hard to piece together what is going on. I would support federal prosecution for any local officials who were caught deliberately manipulating numbers, as this greatly affects the proper allocation of resources to law enforcement.
I hope the above comes from this tragedy, and we don't just devolve into the left running their usual distraction/diversion tactics, while the right just obsesses over the black crime rate. That will not accomplish anything.
In the 90s we had major crime-and-punishment reform, and saw two straight decades of declining violent crime everywhere. We need that again.

No, I'm not just playing it safe.
As you know, I don't agree with CRT or DEI, nor do I believe in affirmative action or "equity" (very different than equality) efforts.
I also don't believe you can blame systemic racism -- which is mostly imaginary in the present-day -- for the problems in the black community.
However, blaming an entire race of people for society's problems is foolish, and accomplishes nothing.
What we need are sensible laws, especially dealing with crime and punishment, and then apply them in a colorblind fashion. We can supplement this with social programs, as a way to help troubled minority communities break the cycle of violence and poverty, but it should never replace policing or the justice system.
Once we have ensured a colorblind justice system, which we were already on the way to achieving circa 2013, then the chips can fall where they may. A proper justice system does not obsess over the racial demographics or its inmates, or worry about the percentage the overall population incarcerated.
The only questions should be:
1) Is everyone incarcerated actually guilty?
2) Were their sentences just and fair?
If the answer to both is YES, then the racial makeup of the prisoners, and the overall number of prisoners, should not matter.
Libs disagree with this. They feel that "equity" demands we give 14 chances to violent felons in order to make up for past unfair treatment of black people, and that a disproportionately black prison population means the system is racist. They also believe that the US having the largest imprisoned population in the first world means that we are oversentencing people -- again, a false conclusion.
True conservatives simply want a fair and sensible application of the law, and appropriate prosecution of anyone who breaks it, regardless of the color of their skin. Anything beyond that is overthinking the situation, and results in convincing oneself that violent criminals are only violent because society made them, and we owe it to them to keep trying to fix them. We don't. Some people are bad, and they will destroy society and take innocent lives if we can't accept that and keep releasing them back into the population.
I was very happy to see a new, sensible approach to crime and punishment in 1994, after watching Los Angeles get worse and worse as I grew up there in the '70s and '80s. The reforms worked better than we could have ever imagined, but ever since the (justified) Ferguson shooting in 2014, we've gone the other direction. The 2020 BLM riots sealed the deal, and now blue cities are taking a horrible "restorative justice" (woke) approach to crime and punishment, which results in shit like this.
But if we are just going to turn the conversation into racial criticisms, we won't get anywhere.
