The Dems created this. Back two years ago Obama warned Biden, Trump had a chance to reclaim the WH. Then all of a sudden the lawfare started against Trump. The Feds, New York, Georgia. Then of course Russian hoax which destroyed many innocent people, spending their money on lawyers. Trump is no saint, everyone gets that, but he was flat out targeted and likely jailed if he had not won.
Now certain Dems can defend themselves and spend their retirement money doing so. I hope Trump does not obsess about this for 4 years, but several people need to be made an example of, for no other reason this does not happen again.
CNN is in full meltdown mode. I have no idea if he gets confirmed, but it is funny to watch the lowest rated network flail out of control. We just need an RFK announcement as Health Czar and the cycle will be complete. Like Obama once gleefully bragged, elections have consequences. I actually do like the Musk/Vivek "efficiency bureau" thing. That might actually work out, provided they don't fuck it up.
But too many other people being appointed who really have no business near a serious government position. Unfortunately, that seems to be the norm nowadays in both parties.
Look at some of the Biden appointees. Mayor Pete was a disaster as Secretary of Transportation, and his entire qualification resume was that he liked trains. "Rachel" Levine was another disasterous Biden pick, and not just because of the extreme trans ideology. Levine was horrible during COVID in Pennsylvania, first ordering COVID-positive patients into nursing homes, and then moving his/her own mother out of those nursing homes due to the danger that caused. Huge hypocrite. But "Rachel" was trans, so that made him/her qualified. Awful.
But I'm not going to "whatabout" this one. Trump is staffing mostly with loyalists, probably paranoid about what happened last time, where most of his cabinet had issues getting along with him, and exited bashing him.
Gaetz is a weirdo who just likes to hear himself talk. I always wished he would be excised from the party in some way, just like Madison Cawthorn (remember him?) Just because someone has an R next to their name doesn't mean that they're competent, or that I should be forced to like them. There is an unfortunate retard wing of the GOP, and Gaetz is part of it. This retard wing unfortunately drags down the perception of the rest of the party, much of which is intelligent and very reasonable. Don't get me wrong -- the left has their own retard wing, as well, and that group of people is mostly responsible for Trump winning a second term despite all of his baggage. But just as the more sane Democrats are trying to convince people to expel/mute their retard wing, so must the GOP if they don't want to get clobbered in the 2026 midterms.
Regarding the pedo allegations, it's complicated.
Gaetz claimed it was all fabricated, and that he was the victim of an extortion attempt.
Gaetz's critics claimed that it was 100% true, and that he both had sex with underage prostitutes, and even transported one across state lines.
The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
Gaetz was definitely close with another Florida politician named Joel Greenberg. Greenberg was convicted of paying girls who were 16-17 to have sex with men at his parties. It is alleged that Gaetz was at these parties, and that he knowingly had sex with one or more of the underage girls.
The problem is that it's unclear whether Gaetz knew they were underage, or if he just attended these wild parties and fucked what he assumed were young women brought there by Greenberg. It's also unclear who Gaetz actually had sex with -- if it was the underage hookers, or if it was ones there who were of legal age (there were both present). This was never made clear.
Gaetz was investigated and never charged with anything.
What about the extortion attempt? That was indeed true. A 62-year-old guy was indicted for attempting to extort $25m out of the Gaetz family, claiming he had influence in getting Gaetz out of the entire mess. Gaetz reported this to authorities, and the guy was busted.
At minimum, it's clear Gaetz was telling the truth about being extorted. However, that doesn't mean the allegations themselves were fabricated -- just that some asshole got wind of them, and pretended to have connections to get the matter dropped, in exchange for money.
What do I believe? I think Gaetz did a lot of partying and fucking of hookers, and it's possible some were 16 or 17. He probably didn't know (or care) that they were underage, and just fucked whatever was in front of him. I don't believe that he was seeking out minors, nor that he was told by Greenberg that the girls were underage.
However, this is all troubling behavior for a Congressman, and definitely should disqualify him for any Cabinet position.

I'm a hard "NO" on Gaetz though, but I don't see how he gets confirmed anyway. Too many in his own party hate him.

Hegseth is one of those guys who could effectively shake things up, in a good way. Had Trump appointed some random friend of his to the position -- someone with zero military experience -- that would be a different story.
Some of these other picks, though (especially Gaetz) don't make a lot of sense, beyond "I want people I know I'll get along with".

Heard some scuttlebutt on the radio today. Apparently Trump interviewed several people for AG and was pissed. Apparently the candidates kept harping on the Constitution and he commented they thought they were interviewing for the Supreme Court. So on the way to meet Biden his Chief of Staff Susie mentioned Matt Gaetz again. She apparently has known Matt and his wealthy family for many years in Florida.
If you believe what you hear, Matt will have really no power, he would be a figurehead whose sole role is to go on TV and podcasts and promote Trumps vision of reworking the DOJ. They will surround him with Deputies loyal to Trump at the DOJ for the day to day stuff, and the strategy for the department will come from Trump's Legal Counsel. Sole goal is to institutionalize DOJ under the Executive Branch. In other words Trump will call the shots. Matt will have no real power, it's Trump Legal counsel setting the strategy.
Whether the Senators go along with that who knows, but it's not like Matt is going to run anything day to day. He probably will try to root out DEI people at the DOJ, that is about it. If this is how it works out ultimately, the Dems can come to the conclusion their whole lawfare strategy against Trump was a total failure. If they had just left him alone he probably would not have run.
