Starting to become unhappy with my doctor

Doc orders blood test. Says my bad cholesterol is high. Puts me on a statin. 6 months later, another blood test, numbers still high. Doc changes my statin. I go through a year of issues with unknown muscle pain. Doc does another blood test. Cholesterol still high. Adds another medication for me to take along with statin. 6 months later, blood test, cholesterol still high. Mother tells me she switched statins and had a reduction in her bad cholesterol. I find out the statin my doc has me taking has the known side effect of CAUSING MUSCLE PAIN! I tell my doc I want to switch, she says to continue with the statin that might be causing my muscle pain and take Coenzyme Q10. WTF? I told her (this is all via messages on their “portal”) that I really would prefer to switch as this statin has not been very effective reducing my LDL, but I want to say “What the fuck is wrong with you! I’ve been coming to you for a year and a half with this mystery pain and it’s YOUR FAULT because you switched my statin. I’m not taking this shit anymore!”

Maybe this is the last straw and I should find a different PCP.

Go to a natural doctor, get cured without the horrible side effects. As always if you are overweight lose it. Go on an all natural diet. Low fat no more than 76 grams a day. Stay out of restaurants and don’t eat any processed foods. Exercise daily. I mean sweat exercise every day.

The time for looking for cures while you continue to treat your body poorly are over. Mourn it, and beyond it is much greater than you could ever believe.

haven't you heard? bad cholesterol doesn't matter anymore, there are no sicknesses besides covid, get the shot, it instantly makes you healthy

Couple things including an observation

1. Any MD writing scripts should know these two things which is that they can cause muscle discomfort and can actually cause significant issues (my wife can’t take them for that reason). Secondly anybody on a statin should automatically be taking CoQ10 as the statins will strip it out of the body and it provides protection to muscles but more importantly it can increase risk of a stress induced MI (Heart Attack).

2. The fact your MD ignored these issues for over a year is a clear sign yes you need to find a new MD. This is reminiscent of my wife’s old Endo who kept testing her and getting the same results regarding one issue and never treating it like it would magically fix itself (she had/has secondary adrenal insufficiency due to lifetime use of inhaled steroids for her asthma)

No Flush Niacin and garlic tabs will help reduce the cholesterol issues

Yep guy 400lbs has a massive MI but was tested post mortem positive for Covid. Suddenly it’s a Covid death. (Now supposedly this has stopped they claim but it was definitely happening before)

Yeah, this isn’t the only issue. There have been problems with every single specialist she has sent me to. Everything is pulling teeth with her. I have back issues and told her I wanted to see an ortho (because the neuro she sent me to sucked as did the 3 different pain specialist I have seen) and she complained about hafting to do the extra paperwork required to refer me. Partly I think there’s a lot of shitty doctors out there and it upsets me that I have to navigate a system where a doc would rather see me 6 different times when 1 time would suffice because they get to bill my insurance more. It’s no wonder we spend the most money in the world per capita and have shitty results. Health care itself isn’t complicated. A health care system with a bunch of baked in profit generation is.

The situation you describe makes it seem as though your doctor is not sufficiently focused on you. If it were me I probably wouldnt get a new doctor because of the pain in the ass that involves but I might try to address the situation again and in person. If you are not able to get an in person meeting then that to me would be unacceptable and a deal breaker in considering any further treatment. I hope you have a good outcome!

That’s ok, it was good advice. I have a lot of pain issues already (neck and spine) so it’s just unacceptable that she would rx something to me that causes more pain and then doesn’t recognize the issue when I bring it up to her. I thought I had cancer or something because the pain in my muscles didn’t seem related to the back and neck issues I have.

I do. It’s the only thing I have found that works almost as well as getting shit faced drunk and I kinda grew out of that.

same here. my issues are different but the medicine is the same. I take nothing else. THC is a great medicine for pain. Wish you better health and pain free days

My sister had the same reaction to a particular statin, repeatedly complained to her doctor about it over the phone over several months, asking to be put on another statin. That doctor kept prescribing the same one that was giving her muscle pain and muscle wasting until my sister read the doctor the riot act to her in a face-to-face meeting, saying she would NOT take that statin anymore AND complain to the managing physicians of that facility if she wasn’t listened to on the matter. That got the doctor’s attention and she prescribed her something else that didn’t cause her problems.

Not sure why it took such confrontation to get the doctor to listen, but I’m guessing that some doctors are routinely responding to pharmaceutical company incentives they give doctors for prescribing their medications, which while not being illegal, is a shady practice that pharma companies can get away with that can undermine the integrity of a doctor’s practice.

My doc put me on Lipitor and Mama noticed my muscles were wasting away. Talked to my Bro in law who owned a GNC store. He told me to try taking Red Rice Yeast and CoQ10. Long story short has worked to keep cholesterol in normal range for last 10 yrs.

Sorry I missed this thread until now. I actually have a lot to say.

First off, I don't know why you're dicking around with referrals. That's 1990s managed care era bullshit. Do you have an HMO? If so, get off of it. They suck balls (which might explain your bad experiences thus far).

If you're not on an HMO, something is wrong. You should be on a PPO where you go directly to specialists, without a primary care doctor visit necessary.

With that said, usually cholesterol matters are handled by your primary care doctor, so this shouldn't need a specialist. However, you may want to switch doctors. Yes, muscle pain is a common side effects of statins. The correct advice is to switch around statins until you get one which is both effective and has tolerable (or no) side effects. If it's both failing to work AND causing you muscle pain, quit it. It's doing more harm than good. Get on a different one, and see how that goes.

Also, ignore advice (both from doctors and non-doctors) to control your cholesterol through diet. I'm not saying that a better diet won't help some (and perhaps solve other problems), but it's usually not the way to correct a cholesterol problem. A small percentage of people CAN control it through diet, but that's typicall not the case.

With potential cholesterol issues, the population is separated like this:

- A fairly high percentage are prone to high cholesterol, and will have it regardless of diet, once they pass around age 40. Attempts to control by diet will only help a little bit. This must be controlled by meds.

- A fairly high percentage are NOT prone to high cholesterol, regardless of diet. Even a really bad diet will not result in high cholesterol for these people.

- A fairly low percentage of people are prone to high cholesterol, but primarily through dietary decisions. So if they have a diet low in saturated fats, they can control their cholesterol level without medication.

In the 1980s, it was incorrectly assumed that diet was the reason for most people's high cholesterol, and unfortunately that thinking remains among many today, including some medical profressionals. That's actually not the case for most.

I am walking proof of this. My diet is high in saturated fat, yet my total cholesterol level has always been very good.

I was thinking, and I don’t know if this is how things work or not but it wouldn’t surprise me, could it be that someone in a pharma company has essentially lobbied my doctor to push Pravastatin and that’s why she wanted me to continue taking it? Seems unethical to rx something that you know as a doctor is not the best for the patient but makes you $$$.

If Pravastatin is still under patent protection, you can bet your annual deductible that doctors get something of material value from the pharma company for racking up their prescription counts that drug.
