This is the second high profile spree killing in Canada in the past year. The other was the summertime murder spree of two 19-year-old friends, which resulted in a long manhunt, and the suspects were found having killed themselves after running out of a way to continue fleeing from police.

This killer, a 51-year-old white man, apparently was able to elude police by disguising his car as a police vehicle, and wearing a Mountie uniform.

Its gonna be a huge story. This is even more odd than the vegas shooting guy. Getting very limited media attention outside of Canada but its pretty crazy. Looks like it was being planned for quite some time. Media not releasing a lot of details.

Guy possibly impersonated police and killed at least 19 people. Unclear who everyone is or even where the murders took place. The guy was a 51 year old dentrist...

The mass shooting rampage, the deadliest in Canadian history, began late Saturday, April 18, in Portapique and ended Sunday, April 19, at a gas station in Enfield. Police have not said exactly how many people were killed or wounded during the 12-hour incident, which also included numerous fires to buildings and vehicles. Authorities said the killings occurred in multiple locations across the northern part of the province of Nova Scotia. Police do not believe anyone else was involved in the shootings, and they are not looking for additional suspects.

Dental clinics were excluded from receiving the grant and lumped into a group of other ineligible health care providers, like physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacies and paramedics.

“All of these health care professionals actually can work right now, dentists can not, so there were many questions raised as to why we were excluded,” said Dr. Joanne Thomas, president of the Nova Scotia Dental Association.

The clinic my wife worked at slayed off all their dentists/dental workers pretty much the second shit started going down, ostensibly so they could file for unemployment right away. Not sure how that works in Canada though.

Problem is max unemployment is about 2k a month I believe (24k a year). Sounds like this guy owned the clinic. Would be making well into 6 figures.

You are gonna hear a lot of horror stories regarding the shutdown that haven't come out yet. My cousin in feb was slated for a 2 million dollar buy of a prominent steakhouse. The deal fell through. He tells me had he made the deal him and his wife would have been financially fucked (despite her being a partner in a methadone clinic).

For good or bad most working stiffs in the US, even healthcare adjacent fields, are so underpaid that getting unemployment plus stimulus checks isn't too bad a deal in the short term. But owning a business like that and getting no relief would be very problematic.

Massive story here in Nova Scotia. Body count surpasses the Polytechnique massacre in Montreal. Still a lot of speculation but there is a similarity between Polytechnique and this incident because many of the victims are women and they may have been specifically targeted (starting with his ex it appears).

He also appears to have had an obsession with the police. He made his own RCMP cruiser and collected memorabilia which, it appears, he used to impersonate an RCMP officer during the killing spree. Still more details coming out but there are rumours he was pulling people over on the highway and shooting them (again, not confirmed).

Here's a piece of the puzzle that hasn't gotten much attention but I think it could be relevant. It appears he had a run-in with city police (i.e., not RCMP) at his denture clinic in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia a few months back. There was a story published in February 2020 in a local gossip magazine called Frank. It's hard to describe Frank but they kind of satirize local news items, mostly making fun of local leaders and media figures. The tone of their articles is very glib with a humorous intention. The gist of the story is that some undercover cops parked in his clinic's private parking lot and left their car there, he barricaded them in with a chain across the entrance of the parking lot, they came back and he confronted them, they presented their badges, he didn't care and told them to pay him $20 to let them leave, they called dispatch to send over someone with chain cutters, a bunch of other cops converged on the scene, eventually the situation de-escalated and he let them out of the parking lot. Later that night he got an unrelated speeding ticket.

Just a very weird situation right now. If the pandemic wasn't going down this would make headlines across the world.

Ten years ago I interviewed for a CPA internship in Dartmouth actually. Loved the area. I always remember during the interview it was explained that it was standard every Friday afternoon to spend at the pub with fellow health care workers. Sadly didn;t get it otherwise would have likely stayed there to this day.

Stupid to not allow dentists to work during this time. Among health professionals, they are most likely to have addictions to prescription painkillers. Suddenly losing the ability to work probably has accelerated the slide into addiction that some dentists have.

What a strange story. I find it impossible to believe they were paying a CI $475k. It had to be for something like a drug or gun buy. They wouldn’t pay the second biggest criminal in Canada $475k to turn on the biggest criminal. It makes no sense. Clearly something very weird was going on and it certainly sounds like he has some connection to the authorities. I hope they get to the bottom of it. It sounds like it would be a hell of a story.

Most CIs were caught doing something and turned. Would explain how he’s friends with outlaw bikers and Mexican mafia members. How does some guy who makes dentures come to know people like that unless he was into something shady himself.

That makes more sense to me.

Makes you wonder if he got caught and they were pressuring him to work for them because of people he knew and he just snapped. Would explain why they are disavowing him. RCMP pressure some guy to inform on dangerous people to the point he snaps and kills that many people is a bad look.

I really want this to come out, but it seems unlikely it will.

Yes, MacLean's is generally viewed as a trusted news magazine up here. Long history of respected journalists. Not sure which publication I would compare it to in the U.S. I'm really surprised more people aren't talking about these new details. If any of it is true it could completely derail the RCMP.

Here, with over 30k new Covid cases, civil unrest across the country, Trump rallies, a tanked economy, we are a bit distracted down here, but I would think this would be dinner table conversation in Canada.
