I guess a story goes that he got tired of Snooker championships not offering big prizes for 147's anymore. So he started shooting 146's. When asked why he'd do that, he gave the most Ungar-esque comment i've read ever: "Because I'm the only one who can shoot a 146 when I want to."

I've never played snooker, but there is a table at the pool hall i play at. The table is a fucking monster.

Ungar won a 10k (I think it was either the 4 Queens championship or the SBOP) with a fucking abscessed tooth and a 104 degree fever.

Both are considered to be the best in the game (Ungar is for sure hands down the best gin rummy player to have ever lived, and would probably have held his own against today's assholes in poker)

And like I said, this guy's a fucking BOSS. Shooting 146's just to do it.

Ungar had bravado like that, and there's plenty of stories about him doing crazy shit gambling. 10 high call against Monsour.

The table is much bigger and he balls are mich smaller and lighter. Growing up on American billiards, I never got used to it.

When I watch this guys videos I keep thinking about Mr. Bean at the swimming pool.

@Larry, I suggest you watch some doc's on Higgin's. He was O'Sullivans hero growing up and even called him one of the greatest. In fact it is why he plays the way he does.

Higgins was extremely gifted and if not for his demons could have been even greater, one of those sad stories. Heck even dying (literally) he was ranked.

To add to HK's post....

Snooker is really only played in europe. In south america they play billiards, mostly 3 cushion. I mentioned that i play in chicago at a pool hall that has a snooker table. it also has 4 or 5 billiards tables. one of them is heated from underneath. American billiards, or Pool is more closely related this this, than snooker, as they use the same size tables, and the same size balls.

I've tried to play 3 cushion billiards and it's really hard to do. you have to really be able to move the cue ball.

The mexicans always play 3 cushion billiards. and they play for fucking high stakes.

Also you should see the $100 a ball games of One Pocket they play too.

If anyone's interested, I play at a famous pool hall called Chris's Billiards (yes it's spelled like that). If you've ever seen the movie Color Of Money, it's where they find Grady Seasons and Vince plays him and reluctantly takes a dive (it's like a nightmare isn't it?)

Some of the shit people can do is crazy and that is good but I have to check raise you Larry but it's for bowling instead.

To end the agony, the worst shot you can make in snooker is a foul where your cue ball touches the black ball before going into the pocket, which scores -7 points. Hong Konger got the joke, cos he's smart.

the best thing about Ronnie is he takes the year off between world championships and turns up as is the best one there

Snooker is deadly hard, I was playing last night and couldn't break 30...the snooker world championships are on as we speak- Ronnie is one of the favourites but I think Selby will win again this year.

Alex Higgins is definitely the Stuey of snooker, absolute alcoholic who degened all his money away on horses.

I live very close to what used to be his local (pub)- apparently he wasn't so nice in his later years to Joe Public; if you asked him for his signature you'd have to buy him a pint first.

Just read yesterday where an old friend of his mentioned it wasn't even the cancer that killed him. that was cured! It was his desire not to eat and instead drink. Apparently he had no teeth left and hated having to eat liquids, stubborn, wasted away.

Gutted he lost today in the World Champs at the Crucible to China's #1, Ding.
