So I think Tamayo is the first WSOP Main winner who was following me on Twitter prior to winning (and still is).
In fact, I don't think a single WSOP Main winner besides Moneymaker (and now Tamayo) has ever followed me on Twitter. This isn't as bad as it sounds, because many aren't American, and some barely use social media. However, it's true that besides Moneymaker, I never really got to know any Main winners, either before or after they won.
Tamayo isn't and hasn't even been my friend, but I've gotten along with him in our limited interactions over the years, and he was the one I was moderately rooting for here.
For this reason, I take no pleasure in writing that his win is a little bit tainted by his use of solvers via his friends during the Final Table.
Apparently Tamayo is good friends with former champ Joe McKeehan. Joe was on the rail, and watching the delayed stream with hole cards. They had another friend running sims on a laptop. Then Tamayo would come over, and they'd advice him whether he made the right plays. This was, of course, 15 minutes delayed, but that's still pretty bad. Not against the rules, but still against the spirit of the game.
There was a false allegation that Tamayo was wearing an earpiece during his play, and getting instructions. It was based upon a video which shows McKeehan removing an earpiece which looks like from Tamayo's ear. That's false. It was from McKeehan's own ear. Tamayo had no earpiece:

However, while the "earpiece" shit is nonsense, the solver stuff is very real. This needs to be disallowed at the final table of all events.
Mark Newhouse gets 2nd in final event. Super turbo. $134k…nice
also the spirit of the game:

Dominic Nitsche, who was on Tamayo's rail and using solvers to advise him, taunted his critics, and I had an exchange with him:

Good for you Druff speak your mind
Never be a thin skin
I agree, the announcers also kept referring to solvers in the broadcast (which i found pirate streams of every night)
Solvers were also advertised on the tables. Why mention/promote a product that discourages new players?
Announcing was better before they even knew the acronym ICM. Bring the fish to the table not the Math wizards.
Negreanu won a tourney for $1.1M and still ended up in the red….by $170k or so.
Crazy.
Well, the solver controversy has come home to roost. At least I was a bit ahead of the curve on this one.
When I was commenting on it yesterday at 5pm, hardly anyone was talking about it.
Today everyone is weighing in with an opinion on Twitter, and almost all of them are against Tamayo and friends. Some people are even saying Tamayo should be stripped of his title and prize money confiscated (lol).
Obviously he couldn't be disqualified after-the-fact, as this all occurred in plain sight during a broadcasted final table.
However, it's a good question as to why Jack Effel and other tournament staff didn't put a stop to this. It's also curious why his opponents didn't cry foul. 100% I would have spoken up if I were at that final table and saw Tamayo doing this shit.
There's enough of an outrage, including by people like Negreanu, to where I'm almost certain this will be completely outlawed in 2025. And that's a good thing.

Some asking for my take on the laptop situation at WSOP main final table:
I was under the impression that it was already against the rules this year
Cannot reference solvers or charts during play, only on breaks outside the tournament area
I remember hearing that announcement being made several times, so I’m not sure how this doesn’t break that rule
Either way, if that wasn’t clear this year it’s something that needs to be prohibited going forward
Based on my understanding of the rule, looking at solvers or charts in between hands isn’t allowed
Someone else running solves in game and then telling you in between hands… also should not be allowed
No one at the table said anything as far as I know, but had they asked the floor for a ruling, I don’t see how they would have been allowed to continue
Also, James Chen pointed this out early in the series, showing a video of an announcement on June 3 that such solvers weren't allowed in the tournament area:

Bottom line: Not only is the rule likely to be clarified for 2025, but I'm guessing Tamayo will not be well regarded, at least for the next few years. People are very unhappy about this.
Phil Hellmuth or Daniel Negreanu will win this event and proclaim himself "The Greatest Poker Player to Ever Live".

Haven't dove deep but is the railbird solver thing a brand new issue?
Feels like a flagrant loophole that should have been immediately plugged the first time it happened at any point during the WSOP.
Like, complete fucking joke are you serious? Good on him for exploiting something I guess but seems entirely outrageous.
