I still think my idea of doing a prequel 15 years before GoT is better if one was going to go that route. There may be some weird contractual issues blocking that though, as there often is (eg. when doing the LOTR stuff the filmmakers weren't allowed to use Silmarillion backstory material)

randoms are like 'fuck it, i guess ill write it.'

Someone has already written an end to the series, the HBO show runners. Because of this, I dont think there is any real impetus to bring in another writer to finish the book series. If the TV show had never happened, it wouldn't surprise me at all if another fantasy writer had come in and finished the series, either ghostwriting or doing it in their own name (like Sanderson did with The Dragon Reborn). But as it is, we already have an ending, so I think that is just where we are now.
As an aside, I have been hearing some whispers the prelude series coming out could be a wokeastrophe, as The Eye of the World remake was. I will probably give it a chance anyways, for posterities sake, but the leash will be short.
