Totally dishonest.
It's actually the mildest one yet! It's the most contagious, but also the mildest -- which is a common evolution for deadly viruses.
It still isn't understood how it jumped so abruptly from the dangerous Delta variant to the mild Omicron variant. Usually such an evolution is more gradual, but they're seeing that Omicron is shockingly different than Delta, the prior active variant.
There is a theory that it mutated in someone with a weak immune system, which allowed for major mutations to develop. Another theory (one I like better) is that it merged with a cold coronavirus (which are common in the winter) in someone's body, which made it both a lot milder and a lot more contagious. If either are true, that person inadvertently saved millions of lives.
It is now believed that the current vaccines are mostly useless against BA.5, the present dominant variant.
Here's some comments from from people in NZ

I've noticed more and more lately that I'm getting the stink eye from some of the maskless and occasionally a comment along the lines of, "you know you don’t have to wear that anymore."
Yes, yes I do need to wear a mask, because of selfish bastards like you.

They are wrong. The rules around masks have not changed at all. Hold your ground!

This I agree plus if they get it, they have only themselves and their stupidity to blame. These people are making me mad

I've been insanely careful because i'm immunocompromised. I wear two masks (N95 with cloth mask fitted over it) every time i go anywhere for the last 2 1/2 years, and have barely gone out except for necessities since this all started. Managed to catch covid this week. The new variants are unbelievably contagious so be extra careful. Not always to blame if you get it unfortunately. I took every precaution.

I hope you’re doing okay and I wish you a speedy and full recovery. I’m so sorry the selfishness of the mass led to this.

Fucking viruses, man :( (and fucking entitled, stupid people who don't use masks or do basic sanitation)
Totally get ya and feel the same way. As a teacher, I pretty much live with my mask on when I’m at work. The only times I have it off is when I’m eating/drinking and occasionally when I’m in my own office where I’m lucky to have one that I can keep the door closed. I’m well aware that the latter is a privilege that a majority of the teachers don’t get.
So many teachers have been sick with covid and the flue the least term - coincidently when the school mask mandate was lifted. Barely any kids wear masks in my classroom. With older ones like year 13, I am the only one that wears one in my class. Yes, some teachers have stopped wearing masks, but put it this way - I work in a pretty big department and none of us had covid until last term, and I think all of us except about 2 or 3 had it all in that one term, as soon as kids stopped wearing them.
Fuck, I wish they’d bring stricter mask mandates back. Not just schools but everywhere else that’s indoors or big gatherings. And enforce it.

The lack of enforcement is mind boggling. I recently did a course and at the start of it (March) they were real big on masks and it was great (well, yes masks can be uncomfortable, but it is what it is). Fast forward two months and it was just me and one other person in my class that bothered to still wear the masks when inside! Even the tutors stopped. It's like everyone just got lazy and complacent or something. You'd have signs around saying to mask up, but it just became background to them.
Real quick another story, I had to go pick up some meds at the pharmacy about a week or two ago. As I was entering the door, I realised I had forgotten my mask in my car and it just so happened to be raining (this time of year? shocker, I know).
I went inside with my jacket covering my face and quickly asked one of the pharmacy techs for a spare mask:lol2 if they had any. They did, and as I put it on, I looked around to see everyone standing around waiting for their meds, and I think only one other person out of the eight or so patrons was also wearing a mask.

The level of retardation here is unfathomable.
