Losing pets is fucking difficult, even when you know their destiny of a limited lifespan.
Several years ago now, I lost both of my golden retrievers two months apart. After one passed from cancer, the other basically shut down and wanted nothing to do with life.
I have not gotten another dog since; I took a break from that. I just have a couple of cats at the moment which are about 12 years old.

Surprised you didn't mention that the Timerline Lodge was the exterior used for "The Shining".
I still need to stay there one night, in room 217 (the room in the novel, which was changed to 237 by the hotel's request).
You're right, I completely forgot to mention that. Since we live only about a 90 minute drive from the lodge, I often forget about its international appeal due to "The Shining". At the front desk, there is actually an axe just like the one in the movie that you can hold and take a photo with. I need to remember to do that the next time we're there. And there is a little museum on the first floor that's dedicated to the history of the lodge and to the filming of "The Shining". I snapped a few photos of it during our last stay
