What works to fire up a team one year may not work the in later years. High intensity coaches get tuned out eventually, for instance. A player's manager gets run over by players.
Maybe the Royals players are getting tired of Ventura. That is interesting. The Royals run may be done. A lot of their success was that everyone was engaged all 9 innings. Lots of come from behind action.
Greinke appears to have finally figured things out. He pitched a 3 hit complete game tonight and is now 8-3 on the year. He has been an underdog 2 times this year and has won both games. I would love to see him going against Kershaw this year.Quote:

Puig is on the DL, but makes a relatively reasonable $5.5m, so even with him in the lineup, the Dodgers just aren't fielding an expensive group of starting position players.
One problem is that the Dodgers lack reliable "money" superstars. There's of course Kershaw and Jansen (if you can consider a closer a superstar), and maybe Gonzalez, but he's declining. Also, the Dodgers have a few young players who are very cheap and performing well, such as Trayce Thompson, Corey Seager, and Joc Pederson. Where would this team be without them?
The Dodgers are really operating like a small-mid market team, as most of the money they are spending has gone to waste, and they are relying primarily upon young stars to carry them.
Besides Gonzalez, Kershaw, and Jansen, can you name any Dodgers player making a lot of money who is worth even close to what he's getting?
Hopefully all of this will change in the coming years as some of these big contracts fall off, and the Dodgers can hopefully sign some reliable, big name players to complement Seager, Pederson, Kershaw, et all.

I don't know why you're laughing at the farm system. It sucked at one point, but the same can't be said now.
In addition to Urias (#3 rated prospect in MLB coming into this year), they have Jose De Leon (another highly rated pitcher), and the farm system has also produced Pederson and Seager.
The jury is still out on Pederson, a mysterious power hitter who BOTH walks and strikes out a lot. He does need to get the strikeouts under control to some degree, and hit for a better average. Also, he's underutilizing his seed right now.
Seager, the better prospect, is already off to a great start. While it's still early, I think the Dodgers have found a bona fide star in him.
No argument regarding Epstein. I wish we had him.
You're too hard on AGon. I think it's because he never fit in with the Sox, so you mostly saw him suck. He's done very well with the Dodgers. While he's now on the decline, in prior years he was super-reliable when you needed a base hit. I always said that AGon was a better hitter when he wasn't TRYING to hit a home run. Bring him up to bat in the 9th with the team down 4-3 with runners in scoring position, and he's delivering a surprisingly high percentage of the time. He gets into trouble when he's trying too hard to hit the ball out, resulting in strikeouts. I realize that he's very slow on the basepaths, but so are many good hitters. His defense at 1B, while not as essential as defense at other positions, has always been very good.
Dodgers may have found a hidden gem in Trayce Thompson. Certainly Trayce is from a talented family, given that Klay is his brother. 10 HR already as a part-time player, including some walkoffs. This could also just be variance or the result of pitchers not knowing his vulnerabilities yet, but I like what I see so far.
The Dodgers current front office has been good at practicing avoidance regarding bad long term contracts, but they've been lousy when it comes to short mid-level contracts. Basically they keep acquiring crap players with an upside, spending way too much money on them for 1-3 year deals, and hoping they blossom. That's a sound small market strategy, but it's a huge mistake with a big market team.
This Dodgers team won't be bad. It also doesn't seem like it will be good. I predicted this coming into the year (see posts in Feb/March). I think the front office knew they were basically wasting 2016 and were going to start making some real signings in the '17 and '18 seasons, as some of these crap contracts fall off.
We will see.

He wasn't throwing inside, he was trying to hit him. Intentionally. He tried no less than 3 times earlier in the game, and finally succeeded the 4th time.

Betting the crazy lines on Kershaw games was like investing in low yielding Treasuries. A safe lock.
He is the greatest pitcher ever probably having the greatest year ever.
A crime that all this has been wasted on the Dodgers.
The one thing lacking is getting his ticket punched with a post season run. The conversation regarding his opting out and the Dodgers exploring an earlier deal is gonna heat up.
