I don't care about red and blue states, I'm a republican for the record. The vaccine significantly reduces the chance of being seriously ill from covid, these states are among the lowest vaccinated in the country and have the highest hospitalizations. This isn't some in depth puzzle that needs to be solved. You're really gonna talk about the weather?

NY and NJ were the first to get the covid outbreak because that's where all the flights from Europe land, took awhile to spread to the other states.

...that's roughly where people are with Covid seasonality. Likely a factor, for multiple reasons, but it's just one force moving the numbers. Human behavior tends to push it to the back/middle of the list. Most often seen when it gets colder. And that's how it works with flu.

Last year when the virus was first introduced to different states is a really iffy thing to look at. For the first 6 months the weather likely didn't even make the top 10 of reasons why it was spreading where and how fast.

But yea hospitalizations is a far better metric to look at than cases and in the end when we look at how well vaccines (or any other measures) worked we're going to be looking at deaths. Comparing last years cases to this years cases just isn't comparable.

Define “rate”. It’s a very important distinction.

There are more kids and younger aged people making up the overall population of people in ICU’s and deaths on a percentage basis now compared to a year ago.

The rate at which Covid or delta or theta or whatever Greek alphabet variant you want to use is impacting kids and younger people is unchanged to a year ago.

The appearance of higher % of instances is because the group that kids and other young people are being compared too is vaccinated at a much higher rate. People 65 and over at 73% plus, 40 and under are less than half.

The overall impact to vaccinated older people has greatly improved while the younger/kids bucket has improved but at a much slower rate.

You need to look at all the variables when you talk about this shit. Half the population can’t seem to wrap their heads around it.

As the great Yogi Berra once said, 50% of all statistics are made up.
