He has said he wants to change the libel laws to make it easier to sue the press. This has always been a matter for the states but in theory there could be federal laws about it.
I think if we lived in Turkey or Russia someone like Trump could actually be a danger in this regard. But I really think our system of checks and balances and overall our political culture and values make it impossible for a President to go this far. Maybe that is part of Trump's frustration, is that he thought he would be the Putin/Kim Il Jong of the United States, and he has had a rude awakening the President just doesn't have that reach.
Democracy and freedom of speech don't work out very well or last very long in the 3rd world because, for good or bad, those just aren't things that are valued in places like Africa and the Middle East. I just think our values are strong enough to weather the storm of a president like Trump in this regard. I think most of the fears of him becoming a despot or tyrant are completely unfounded. I absolutely believe he would like to be able to do this if given the opportunity, but I don't see it happening. I think even the Republican Party would ultimately turn on him if he tried to reach too far.
That being said, between him and Congress between their campaign to enrich the rich at the expense of everyone else, his foreign policy "misadventures" and assault on the environment, some real damage could be done in the next 3 years to our country. But restricting freedom of speech of the press, or anyone else, I just don't see it.
If anything, when it comes to restricting freedom of speech, there is much more danger from the left IMO, who are actually campaigning to restrict freedom of politically incorrect speech.
