The character question was already answered 28 years ago. Prior to that, the American people wouldn't elect a President they believed lacked moral character. (Nixon's flaws in this department were discovered during his second term.)
Bill Clinton's lacking morality was known in 1992. People didn't care. They liked his politics and charisma, and elected him anyway. That was the beginning of a new era in American Presidential politics.
Personally I'd prefer this were fleshed out better in the primary -- that each party simply wouldn't nominate someone who is shady and/or an asshole. But that's not the way it is.
You get your party's candidate in November every 4 years, and if you vote against him, you are voting against a lot of your own core beliefs regarding where America should go.
