They also should've treated it like his claim wasn't credible (while also holding him for questioning), and then locked down the area if possible. And if not possible, they should have at least spread out and looked for anyone attempting to leave who looked suspicious.
It kinda looked like they accepted at face value that he was the shooter, and let their guard down.

They just reported live specifically that any prior reports of the father being law enforcement or a sheriff deputy are false.
