A relative of mine went for a colonoscopy today at the same place I went last time. Keep in mind this is a different facility from the one I used in 2021, but the same as the one I did in late 2023.
My experience was, no pun intended, shitty.
Recall this is what I wrote in December 2023:
Quote:
Oddly they were concerned that I drank water 4 1/2 hours before the procedure (which became 5 1/2 because they were running late), because their instructions said "not to drink after midnight". However, they both told me on the phone that I could drink up to 4 hours beforehand, and their afternoon colonoscopy instructions also state you can drink up to 4 hours before. So it made zero sense why they were annoyed. My guess is because they were running behind, they didn't want another thing to worry about.
They said they would "empty my stomach" while I was knocked out, in order to prevent aspiration of the water in there. Transparent to me because I was asleep for it.
Not sure what I'll do next time, as I really don't want to go an absurd number of hours with no water. I was already thirsty as it was.
Anyway I'll worry about this in 3 1/2 years when I do my next one.
I was unhappy about this whole thing because I couldn't get a straight answer out of them regarding how long to avoid drinking before the procedure.
Note above that there were dueling instruction sheets on their website -- one which said "no drinking after midnight" (which would be a minimum of 7 hours, as their first procedure is at 7am), and the other which said "no drinking more than 4 hours beforehand".
So I was annoyed that I got a lecture about not following instructions for having drank 5 1/2 hours before the procedure.
But the bigger problem was how late they were. My procedure was 9:30am, with an 8:30am checkin time. They didn't get going with this until 11am, meaning they were 90 minutes late. That's probably why they were annoyed they were going to have to waste extra time "emptying my stomach".
Anyway, upon reading reviews, I saw that lateness is a chronic problem there. Some reviews claimed they were as much as 3 hours late.
However, that paled in comparison to what my relative went through.
Like me, this person sat for 90 minutes past their assigned time, waiting for it to start. Then they were informed that the anesthesiologist "didn't show up", which was bizarre because this was now 10:00am. How could they not know this until 3 hours into the day?
They claimed that the only options would be to reschedule (awful, having gone through the prep) or to take "twilight sedation", which basically takes you back to the 1990s before propofol was available. Amazingly, everyone there just shrugged their shoulders and took the twilight sedation, without questioning anything. My relative spoke up and said absolutely not, I don't want to be awake for this at all, and I also don't want to have wasted my prep and time spent here this morning. After a lot of arguing, they convinced another doctor and anesthesiologist in the facility to do the colonoscopy, so the propofol could be used. Not sure why it also had to be a different doctor, but I'll get to my theory in a second.
Anyway, this place is full of fail. They're nearly impossible to reach on the phone, you can't get a straight answer out of them when you do, and apparently they overbook the colonoscopies and run way behind. I am not going back there.
What do I think happened today? I think they fell so behind today that they made up the "anesthesiologist didn't show up" story, because it sounded better than the truth. By cutting out the propofol, which is time consuming, they can speed everything up and catch up. I think the reason the doctor also switched was because that was who was behind. If it were just the anesthesiologist, why not keep the same doctor and use the other anesthesiologist? I guess it's possible they work in pairs, but the fact that they took 3 hours to realize that the anesthesiologist didn't show up is highly suspect, especially given how this place is known to run way behind.
Inconvenience aside, I also don't trust this place to do my colonoscopy anymore, if they're always in a rush. Not only can they miss polyps that way (now I'm a little concerned about my unexpected "no polyps" result last time), but they can also perforate the colon if they are rushing through it.
My advice: Check reviews, avoid anywhere that the reviews suck.
