Funny enough, the down ballot concern is no longer a big deal.
2020 was a good example. Biden won, but otherwise it was NOT a good election for Democrats. Most notably, the House was a disaster for them. A number of "Safe D" seats went red, a lot of "lean D" seats went red, as did a lot of tossup seats. How many "lean R" and "safe R" House seats went blue in 2020? Zero point zero.
And had Republicans not fucked up with bad Senate candidates, it could have been a big year for gaining Senate seats, too.
There were a lot of people in 2020 who didn't like the Democrats, but hated Trump even more, so they voted Biden and then Republicans the rest of the way.
Indeed, in 2024 the reverse seemed to be showing in polls, as Trump was clearly ahead, yet Democrats were looking moderately good overall in the other close races.
I don't think the Biden replacement will affect much as far as the other races. Kamala isn't going to win. Gretchen Whitmer could win (she probably has the best shot out of any possible candidates), but she might not want to step in at this point, given that she's 52 and has lots of time to run in the future with a full campaign chest.
