Great post about why getting a test is useless to the average person (but does help epidemiologists).
Did you know that tests for COVID19 aren't really going to help you (Mr. Joe Public living in Calgary, Alberta)?
It helps epidemiologist. Don't know who they are? Well they study disease and how to reduce its impact on us good people. Positive COVID19 tests will give them an idea of how many people are in our community with COVID19 and consequently what impact it will have on healthcare resources (the number of people that will be admitted to hospital and how many people will likely need the Intensive Care Unit "ICU" - think breathing machines and life saving blood pressure medications). About 15-20% of the people infected with COVID19 will need to be admitted to hospital and about 5% will need ICU. It also helps them provide advice to Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services (yes, they are 2 different organizations) about what to do to minimize virus spreading - think mass gathering cancellations, travel restrictions, advice to returning travelers, and yes, school closures if necessary.
Is there a cure/medication that we give these admitted patients? Nope. It's oxygen and fluids and maybe some antivirals that aren't particularly effective. If they get super sick, we use machines to take over their breathing. We have a limited number of these machines. And there is a limited number of doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists who know how to keep people alive with these machines. These care givers are super smart and super brave (considering every one of their future patients will be very contagious)
But everyone I speak to wants a test! Follow my logic as I explain that a test will not impact what you should do, or what you will do.
1. you are SICK but WELL - think headache, runny nose, cough, feeling like shit. you want a test and somehow you get one.
a. it's negative. Hooray! Now what are you going to do? Go back to work even though you are coughing your brains out? Well your colleagues and customers won't care if you scream "but i'm negative!". So guess what? You'll STAY HOME - as you should! Because you are still sick - just not with COVID19. And your colleagues and customers should thank you for staying home.
b. it's positive. don't worry. 80% of the people with COVID19 have mild symptoms. You'll STAY HOME - as you should. Because you don't want to spread COVID19 to anyone else. If you get more sick, you will call 911. Brave paramedics in space suits will pick you up and you will likely GET ADMITTED to a hospital.
2. you are are NOT SICK. You want a test because you think you are at risk of COVID19 because the asymptomatic lady across the hall just got back from Palm Springs. Imagine you get one (but you won't) and it's negative. Hooray! Now what are you going to do? Go back to work? Fly to Disney land with your kids for spring break? Hangout at Chinook mall for a few hours? WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC. Our only weapon against this is to socially isolate/distance. What you should do is STAY HOME and watch Netflix.
3. you are SICK and UNWELL - think chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, lethargy, loss of consciousness. You should call 911. Brave paramedics in space suits will pick you up and take you to a hospital. YOU WILL GET A TEST. If you are positive for COVID19 you will be admitted to a hospital. If you are negative for COVID19 you will be admitted to a hospital.
Does everyone see how there is only two paths here: either STAY HOME or GET ADMITTED to a hospital. But it wasn't the test that determined your path. It was SEVERITY of your illness.
That's the key. Tests don't help you determine what to do. The illness does.
Leave the test results for the egg head epidemiologists (who are way smarter than me and I love them).

so we decided to change our flights and extend our rental car and parking at Vancouver air port.
I tried to call the airline (West Jet) couldn't get through rang busy for almost hour... finally i caught a line and eventually some one answered, I immediately gave her my number incase we got cut off, she assured me we were not going to get cut off. I explained that we wanted to extend our visit (fully expecting to have to pay 5 or 6 hundred to do this) she told me $400. I was like ok i guess that's ok, she laughed and said she would rebook our tickets and refund us four hundred... WTF ?? really? yup. she said do you want to think about it for a bit? me: um no book it thanks.
oddly enough there was a very big rain storme and the roof on our villa was leaking in the living room so I called the front desk and ended up wasting 3 or four hours and they decided to move us to a different villa. me:well as long as it is closer to the tennis court and western aspect ill agree. got a perfect room better than our other one a bit (corner suit) We have a Chairman status with Marriott I believe the highest available to public.
normally i am pretty grumpy when things like this happen, they offered me $100 room credit for my troubles i indicated that it should be much more we settled on $350. also refund for canceled pitbull concert 4 tickets $125 each. $90 more for vehicle rental.
almost every thing has closed down here including a golf course while we were on the 16th hole Jesus
Hope we didn't fuck up by extending our trip but its so nice here and hope to retire partly here in 7 or 8 years.
