You visit your doctor for your annual checkup, which is 100% covered by your insurance. (This whole premise violates the whole concept of 'insurance', but that's another topic for another time.)
Near the end of the checkup, the doctor asks you, "So... any other pain or discomfort you're experiencing?"
You stop and think for a second, wanting your doctor to know everything so you can get the most out of your checkup.
"Oh, I do have stomach pains every so often. Like maybe once a week."
The doctor asks, "Does it come along with diarrhea? Any blood in the stool?"
"No, not usually," you respond. "Just kinda hurts sometimes and goes away."
"Okay, just watch it and let us know if anything changes," says your doctor, seemingly helpfully.
You go home from your 100% covered annual physical feeling good.
You get your bill in the mail.
You owe a $50 co-pay for a gastro exam, and you see in the Explanation of Benefits that the insurance company also cut the doctor another $83 check. This is ON TOP of the hundreds of dollars you see your insurance paid the doctor for the annual physical.
Was that an actual gastro exam? Obviously not.
Did you know that answering a doctor's question of, "Does anything hurt?" constitutes a separate exam? Of course not.
Should the doctor be earning another $133 for this trick -- $50 of which came out of your pocket as a result of your "free" exam? Nope!
Is this legal right now? YES IT IS!
Will changing from our current system to a socialized medicine system solve any of the above, aside from shifting that $50 over to the government's tab? No, it will not.
