I wonder what would have happened if Conor played the same game Floyd did early, and had all his energy in the mid to later rounds like Floyd did.

Probably the same ending, but it would have made for an even better fight with them both going at it in rounds 4-10.

And yes it was stopped early. That doesn't mean the outcome would have been any different, but there was no reason to not give him at least a standing 8 rather than just stopping the fight immediately. I guess the ref forgot about that. The last 4-5 shots didn't even hit him. He got hit with two hard rights no doubt in that sequence, but the "flurry" right before ref stepped in was a bunch of punches that didn't even land or grazed him.

To be clear, I still think it was a 100% valid stoppage, but Conor himself pointed out (as did I) that he often ends up wobbly and fucked in those late rounds (like he did against Diaz) but is totally capable of coming back:

That said, asking the ref to factor something like that in in real time is absurd of course, the fight was well in the bag for Floyd by then, Conor wasnt going to steal shit much less land a fight ending punch.

so final tally, ppv took down 500m, floyd gets 40% so thats 200m, plus the 100m guaranteed purse, so yeah he woke up this morning 300m richer in so many words.

not sure what he earned in terms of endorsements / appearances but i doubt its going to move that needle too far at this point.

Most title fights no longer employ standing 8 rule because it is seen as dangerous (my guess but maybe I'm wrong, I just know they don;t seem to use it). My guess is it was not allowed last night either as its pretty much been eliminated from most bouts.

Also why am I explainign this to you guys when I stopped watching boxing in 2003...

There would be an argument here if he had Floyd in trouble at any point in the fight. The fact is he never did. Not even remotely close.

Conor did way better than expected but he appeared to lack power in a boxing stance. Mayweather got hit a lot because he didn't respect Conors power and walked him down. Mayweather didn't take anything resembling a big shot. After the fight when asked if Conor hits hard Mayweather tried to be nice and awkwardly said 'hes solid' Just like JMM said, Mayweather was the bigger puncher and was the man coming forward most of the fight.

Regarding the stoppage I still question Conors heart. He can say whatever he wants but he was getting hit hard and didn't once return fire in that last minute. You have to defend yourself or punch back otherwise the ref has to stop it. If he really wanted to stay in there and see the end of the round he would have found a way to throw a punch or cover up. In the previous round he also intitiated two takedowns but abandoned and just clinched. Conor was done and in that tough moment I think he wanted out of the fight. Just like he did in Diaz one.

not for nuttin but floyd's ex flat out accused conor of throwing the fight. imo between the two of you, you may be onto something. eg he looked for the less embarrassing exit rather than risk getting actually highlight reel supermeme 2000 ko'd in the final 9 minutes.

You could hear Conor after the fight telling Floyd "I underestimated your power". Damn near everyone he fights says the same thing after the fight.

JMM,Thanks for sharing your expertise ITT. Things played out exactly as you predicted. One thing this fight did was shine a bright spotlight on the sport of boxing. Whether that results in increased ratings going forward will be interesting to see.

The United States Association of Boxing Commissions eliminated the standing eight count in 1998. The Association of Boxing Commissions eliminated the standing eight count from practice and it is usually not formally invoked in professional bouts today.

The only reason McGregor won the first 3 rounds was because Mayweather let him.
Mayweather controlled the fight from start to finish. He could have ended it at any time.

Floyd was way off his game, he was far less accurate with his punches than normal and any boxing top contender would have beaten him.

Mayweather admits it.

We have a bar and you pay one price to show indoors. They base it on your max occupancy. It's also a bit weird because you can actually negotiate down the price with your rep. At our place it's usually between 5k and 15k depending on the fight.

I don't think Floyd has the power to end it at any given time and early there were real risks. That being said this still wasn't a close fight and it was a very easy one for Floyd. I agree that he looked 40 and rusty but he did exactly what he wanted and expected in there. It takes a bit of time to break a guy like Conor down, to me it was still a totally dominant performance and the easiest win of Floyd's career.

On a very interesting note Floyd bet on himself to finish the fight inside 9.5 rounds which he did. He bet $187,000 on himself to do that and personally tried to bet $400,000 cash a few hours prior to the start of the ppv but was denied. Floyd and his corner knew exactly how this would play out although I think they thought it would end around 6 or 7 (also what I thought) but Conor probably was a bit better than expected and Floyd was older and a bit rusty so it drug out.

I need to take a moment to say I told you so. Earlier in this thread I said that Conor would win an early round or two and that Floyd would be super cautious and defensive. Just because it wasn't an early KO doesn't mean this still wasn't a fully dominant and easy win for Floyd. He fucking played with Conor rounds 5-10.

I totally agree that Floyd is done, he would lose to guys like Canelo and GGG. Conor also doesn't want to play with those guys, unlike Floyd they would happily stand and trade with Conor right from the first bell and he would learn in a hurry how much power a prime boxer has in his hands.

Oscar De La Hoya is one dumb mother fucker. He insulted and belittled the Conor vs Mayweather fight because he was jealous. A real businessman would have pretended that fight was legit and set the ground work for the winner of that fight to take on the winner of GGG vs Canelo. That would be another massive pay day but Dumb fuck De La Hoya was too temperamental to think. Like or hate Floyd he's one smart businessman when it comes to boxing.
