Iran expected that Israel would respond by attacking Hamas, which would then harm their rapidly improving relations with the Saudis. When people ask, "Why should the US government care so much about Israel?", the simple answer is, "Look which side China and Russia are on, and you'll understand why."
Hamas and Hezbollah are definitely controlled by Iran. They're made to believe that they are fighting a religious war against Israel, and that the defeat of Israel will allow an all-Islamic Middle East.
