Bob Evans is shuttering stores all over the place and the investment group has a for sale sign on them. I have been to Bob Evans many of times, but what crippled their operations is when the grocery division spun off as a separate company (which is a cash cow), which forced the restaurant chain to be self sufficient. The quality has just gone downhill. But the real culprit is the Love's, Pilot, Flying J phenomenon. They have Dennys, McDonalds and now even IHOPs connected to them. This dramatically saves on real estate costs, and it's just more convenient for the traveling consumer. Plus, in today's economy, its just not realistic to expect a family of 4 to spend $70 (with tip) at a Bob Evans, when you can run through a McDonalds driver thru and spend $25. I'd be shocked if they make it to the end of the decade. I went into one over the summer for lunch and the place was a 1/3rd full, meanwhile the Chick Fil A across the street had a line with literally 50 cars deep. I got some type of turkey and mashed potato plate, with tip it was $22. It was fine but I could have got a chicken sandwich at a drive thru for $5 and saved 45 minutes. BE just outlived its usefulness in a changing economy, society.
