I'm pretty sure Nixon skates on watergate without issue if the GOP had this type
of stranglehold. There were multiple points where he almost dodged it if not for running bad. And the newspapers back then had the resources to do deep research for years. Now, they are basically nursing homes that run on shoestring budgets and interns.
Also, those FBI offices are certainly skewed both directions depending on which office. They're less political than other agencies, but they aren't apolitical.
I'm 100% sure Trump has some nefarious involvement with the Russians. Not saying he's a Manchurian candidate, but shady business and organized crime ties at a minimum. I think you have to be blind to not see that, but I think he has maybe a 30% chance of getting caught up in it, and if he does, it will be because the establishment Republicans start to view him as a liability. Right now, he's too popular with the base. With his loyalists moving into all the prominent positions, I think a European intelligence agency might be more likely to drop a bombshell that can't be ignored before our own.
