Okay, so a few details about last night's game before we talk about tonight.
In 1988, after the Dodgers shockingly beat the A's in 5 games, I said to myself, "When I'm an adult, I'm going to a World Series game."
I was 16 at the time.
I was 3 inches shorter than I am today.
Ronald Reagan was President.
I had not even kissed a girl yet.
"New Kids on the Block" didn't even exist yet.
Miami Vice was still on the air.
Clayton Kershaw was an infant.
We were a decade away from most people having a cell phone, and two decades away from most people having a smart phone.
Corey Feldman was still twinkish enough for Hollywood perverts to want to molest.

Fourteen years later, the Angels made the World Series, and the Dodgers still hadn't done so. In fact, the Dodgers only made the postseason twice in that 14-year span, and they lost in the NLDS both times. I always disliked the Angels, but they were up against the Giants, so I was forced to root for them. I almost went to a World Series game. But I decided that it wasn't worth the expense to go to a game where I liked neither team.
The Dodgers made the postseason in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. None produced a World Series appearance.
So here we are in 2017. Dodgers won 104 games -- the most they had won during my lifetime. They would have won 110+ if not for that weird 1-16 swoon in the late summer. Everyone in LA was excited about them. I knew a World Series game would be ridiculously expensive, perhaps approaching 2016 Cubs territory.
So I had an inner battle going on.
The huge Dodgers fan in me wanted to keep the promise to myself to go to a World Series game. I could afford it, and it was something I had been waiting 29 years to do.
The Jew in me couldn't see forking $2000 for a single seat to any baseball game. It just seemed insane. High three figures I could justify, but $2000 or more was just crazy. I felt like I would have been an idiot sheep, wasting ridiculous money on something far, far overpriced because of the hype, even if I was a true, lifelong fan. Sure, I could have sat in some horrible nosebleed seats for $800, but it's impossible to get a good view of the game from such seats. I would rather just stay home.
Then came Game 5. One of the craziest, oddest, most exciting games in World Series history. When the Dodgers failed to score in the top of the 10th, I knew they were going to lose. There was no way a tired Kenley Jansen was going to keep another run from scoring on a night like that. When they lost 13-12, I was depressed like all other Dodgers fans. But I did take a moment from my gloom to think of three upsides:
1) Astros can't seem to score on the road, and the only night they were really able to do so was on a really hot, dry one (Game 2)
2) Games 6 and 7 would be the opposite of hot and dry
3) It seemed likely that the demoralizing loss, combined with the inability to clinch the next game, would send ticket prices collapsing
Indeed, I watched the $1300+ nosebleed seats, the cheapest in the park for Game 6 while Game 5 was still being played, fall 40% immediately upon the Game 5 loss. The rest of the seats showed a similar decline.
Could it be? Could I attend a World Series game AND be a cheap Jew at the same time? It was like a dream scenario for me.
I watched the prices like a haw for the next 2 days. They fell in price, but only slowly. Still, they weren't stabilizing. I had hope. On Tuesday, it was Halloween, and I knew that I would be going by myself if I wanted to go, as Benjamin wouldn't want to miss trick-or-treating, and none of my friends were willing to pay World Series prices to see the game. I was fine with that. I just wanted to see the game.
I don't live close to Dodger Stadium. In fact, it takes me an eternity to get there, because I have to go right into heavy southern California traffic. The prices started to rapidly decline around 10am, as panic set in among sellers who hadn't seen the price-falling phenomenon occur in the previous two home games. It kept falling, and suddenly it was a reality that I could have a very good seat for under $1000. But it wasn't quite there yet.
I finally decided that I had to gamble. I had been watching certain seats for the past several hours. These were seats with the following criteria:
- Below or near $1000
- Willing to sell a single seat (usually a single seat or 3 seats available)
- Field (1st level) or Loge (2nd level), between 1st and 3rd base, first 8 rows. If field, not behind the foul screen.
So this left about 5 different possible seats I could buy.
I got in my car, and decided to gamble. I had an iPad on my lap, with StubHub open. I was refreshing every minute or so, as I made my way toward the stadium. My plan? I would watch those 5 seats and finally pull the trigger when 4 of them were gone. The prices were still falling, so this was the optimal, yet mostly safe play.
Finally, it happened. The last good-value seat with the above criteria was standing: Loge, behind home plate, slightly toward 1st, front row. $787, including fees.
DONE
When I hit that Submit button, and it accepted, I knew I was committed. I was going to the World Series.
Then I had to use the Dodgers' horrible, horrible failsite to purchase parking. See, parking was $30 if purchased in advance, and $50 at the gate. "Advance" just meant before you got there. But the site is horrible and the opposite of mobile/iPad friendly (it even sucks on a computer), so I had to grapple with that. Done.

Didn't feel lonely by myself, as I had the whole crowd around me, and the guy next to me was a huge Dodgers fan (and also seemed to be a Jew) and was with his girlfriend, and I could tell she was only a casual fan. So he was happy to have someone to talk to about the game.
Great game. The turning point was the Dodgers getting out of that 2nd and 3rd, nobody out jam in the 5th. Houston was only up 1-0 on I night where I knew there wouldn't be much offense. If the Astros plated 2 more, I thought the Dodgers were likely done. Reddick struck out. Verlander was fortunately up next, and struck out. Roberts then made the controversial decision to walk Springer, pull Hill, and pitch to Bregman. A groundout ended the threat.
Dodgers tied it in the 6th, then took the lead. They never gave it back.
When Jansen recorded the final out in the 9th, I realized that not only did I finally attend a World Series game, but I sat in great seats AND got to see a good game, where the Dodgers forced a game 7.
Similar seats for tonight's game are going for well over $3000.
I'll watch from home.

Strange seeing the Dodgers play in November -- the first time ever that has happened.
Yes, I am nervous about Darvish pitching. But at least Roberts can play this one knowing that he doesn't have to preserve anyone for tomorrow.
This game is quite different than the one Darvish had in Houston. Very different ballpark. Cool, cloudy, drizzly weather. Ball will not carry.
The weather is really doing the Dodgers a big favor. That can't be stressed enough. Astros are built to kill you under good hitters' conditions. You're not going to be able to throw out a better lineup than they can, and they will destroy you if it's a hitters' game.
But they have a weak bullpen, and the edge goes to the Dodgers if it's a pitchers' duel. Last night was a good example of this.
They also can't seem to hit on the road, save for Game 2 of the World Series, when the weather made the ball carry much more.
Also, the Dodgers have the momentum, which has shifted several times this series.
It feels strange to think about the fact that I'm finally watching the Dodgers playing a game-clincher for the World Series -- the first time that's happened as an adult.
Radio will follow the game, probably at about 9pm PT.

These were thousands of dollars for games 1, 2, and 7.
Even for game 6, this was a hell of a deal, as they went down to this price about an hour before game time.
I got one of the best deals in the World Series -- at least at Dodger Stadium.
Only complaint was that leg room sucks on the loge level. I rarely sit there so I didn't realize that. Still very happy with the seats, though.
I bet security is making a killing. I remember during Yankees WS games, guys were charging $500 a guy just to get in the stadium, never mind getting a seat. I bet these guys in LA are charging double that.
this is the one thing I don't get about all the analysts talking about Kershaw...theyre talking about him going one inning tonight...if memory serves the situation is different because the giants bullpen was obviously worse than what the dodgers have, but bumgarner goes in in 2014 and tosses 5 scoreless in relief on 2 days rest...Kershaw is by far and away the best pitcher in the league...why aren't we talking about him going out for 4-5 innings tonight if darvish gives you 4-5 respectable innings...
seems to me if you are the dodgers you want to use darvish for 4-5, have Watson/cingrani situationally face a lefty and have jansen and Kershaw out there for the rest...

You lost me when you compared Bumgarner to Kershaw. I mean seriously. Bum had one of the greatest impacts on a World Series ever. I'm not a Giants fan but Bum was a big time big game warrior - the stuff of history.
Kershaw is the opposite. Mental? Better opponents? Inflexible approach to batters? Who knows? We are beyond excuses and he is what he is.
I love bum...typical country boy who is country strong...a hoss...the comparison is in the fact that Kershaw is the most dominant pitcher in the game in the regular season (bum isn't that far behind)...why should we as baseball fans expect that sorta dominance in the post season, in the most important game of the season? if bum can do it why the hell cant he?Quote:

just feels disappointing to see dominance not come around in the post-season...I had Kershaw in fantasy this year so tried to watch every start I could...I mean that curveball...the way he makes big league hitters look like absolute little leaguers is amazing...id love to get in the box against it just to see what the hell it looks like...
