Probably the best move would've been to stop accepting metro cards and passed out mta passes only to essential workers.
I think today they started shutting everything down from 1-6am to sanitize everything, and they have officials on every platform making sure no car is too crowded and everyone has a mask. Shutting down the subway completely isn't really an option though.
