I don’t want a big nation building exercise, but this could easily have a greater purpose (beyond just getting oil) which will become apparent later.
The suggestion that a destabilizing Middle East could leave us with oil shortages isn’t a bad one.
As crazy as this all seems, it might actually make sense.
Maduro’s removal was incredibly easy and took less than one day.
He wasn’t a democratically elected leader, but rather had control due to force.
The people of the country are very happy to see it, which was predictable.
We now have access to tons of oil.
Put a puppet in charge there until fair elections can be held, and establish close relations with whoever wins.
There’s a lot of positive that comes from all of this, as long as we don’t take on a nation building burden.
This is nothing like what Russia did to Ukraine. That was a territory grab, an attempt to overthrow a democratically elected leader, and nobody in Ukraine wanted Russia there.
Obv this is about oil and getting a leg up on China/Russia, and not about drugs or the other stated reasons for arresting him. But that doesn’t make it bad or wrong.
