i bet you did better than me i only caught a buzz real nice weather though, one of my frends caught 2 steel head salmon not to big though dident keep them, first time i seen these guys real tuff fuckers,
i had the wrong gear for what we were doing, a spey casting set up would have worked as there was lots of elbow room and you had to get the shit way out there, had a go with my frends rod but got nothing, talked to some guys who go to steerman beach (close to me) and fly fish during the summer for pink salmon i know were this is in west vancouver (real nice area water front mansions)on a fly set up i cant waite they say june july is best there.

Man I gotta tell you, I was out there with my spey setup today and I have tonnnnns of work to do, I have forgotten so much about proper spey casting, to the point where I question if I ever really knew it.

That said, even for simple shit like roll casts, a spey setup puts you soooo far ahead of the curve. Like today I had this pretty fierce offshore wind. By doing simple roll casts, I was able to get really consistent placement in (what I assumed would be) fishy waters with absolutely minimal effort. Trying to do traditional fly casts was a hilarious and potentially dangerous fail; a size 2/0 hook in the back was absolutely manifestly possible.

So yeah I encourage anyone to embrace 2 handed fly rods, especially considering that you can get them down to #3 weight. For those classic east coast creeks, I'll stick with one handed of course, but the freedom that comes with knowing you can get your fly on the far bank and drift it all the way across, I mean, for nymphs and streamers and wet flys, that sort of a whole new ballgame if youve been doing one-handed casts.

Btw something I read that basically guarantees I'll set up shop in Portland at some point; when the steelhead arent running, the salmon are. Thats amazing to me.

Fuck I wanted to eat fresh fish tonight...
