Seriously man, to sit behind a computer and call these guys cowards is ludicrous.
Quick story... I have a lot of vets come to my bar. A while back I had a kid that had just come back from his 2nd tour in Afghanistan. He had two older guys sitting next to him and we all got to talking. One of the old guys asked him "how was it for you over there?". His response was a very quick lesson on what not to ask a vet. He replied "man, I mean no offense by this, but that is the worst question you can ask. I had two of my best buddies killed right in front of me this last tour... I mean, how am I supposed to answer that? It fucking sucked."
Until you've been in one of these guys shoes I don't think you are really even qualified to judge their level of bravery.
If you are going to call Darner a coward, then logically it would follow that our military is full of cowards. I mean, shooting the girl and fiance in the head is a bit of a stretch, but those are the tactics of war. Shooting those cops and "not giving them a chance" does not make him a coward. You do not risk your own life in war. To this guy, Darner, it is war. I would call Darner no more a coward than a lot of the armed forces, or the LAPD that randomly shot innocent people on hope. Is Darner evil? Maybe. Misguided? Probably. A coward? No. Not by any standards I have ever been taught growing up.
By putting war and all vets up on some pedestal you are ENABLING future situations. Yea war sucks, no fucking shit, and you assholes just enable future Iraq Wars by being sheep who buy into this shit. The military needs it, because they need fresh bodies. Have you ever studied the various wars the US has been in? They're rarely noble.
