Druff’s boy goes to Boston

Boston has a pitching approach that is in diametrical opposition to the Dodgers “dial it to 11 until it breaks” philosophy. That said, no New Englander should get too excited about this.
Buehler found a little late season muscle memory just in time to save his career and the Dodgers season.
The Fenway Group (includes LeBron) is doing a $1.7b real estate development around Fenway. That figure represents just 2 players for Dodgers but Fenway Group has come under fire in recent years for not ponying up. The Pittsburgh Penguins have been ass too and so on.
There have been musings by journalists that John Henry and company might be coming to terms with the prospects for baseball as a sport and backing off. Recent activity (including the Soto sweepstakes) should stifle the cynics and cheer those who issue permits and loans.
Out of nowhere, its Arizona that snags Burnes for 6/210. Interesting. IIRC Gallen and Kelly are free agents after this year. A hail mary to get back to the dance?
Scary rotation tho.
Dodgers re-signed Teoscar. Shrug. Gonna be a competitive NL West next year outside of Colorado.
I don't think SF has much here. They tried to get Burnes but he didn't want to go there. I think he felt he had a better chance to win in Arizona.
SF doesn't have much of an offense outside of Willy Adames and Matt Chapman. And that's if Chapman keeps up what he did last year. And pitching wise, it's Logan Webb and a bunch of question marks.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaybe if Heliot Ramos continues his unexpected hitting, Jordan Hicks makes it as a starter, Kyle Harrison steps it up, and Robbie Ray gets somewhat back to his old self, they've got a shot to contend.
But yeah Arizona and San Diego should be tough.
Dodgers should be even tougher this year.
Giants definitely need pitching, I'm sure they'll end up with one of the next tier starters now...for whatever thats worth. Flaherty, pivetta, Heaney....etc. At least 1 will be a Giant.
Adames signing was a great "2 birds - 1 stone" signing. Allows them to move Fitzgerald to 2nd. If that Korean outfielder is healthy and good, could be a sneaky good lineup, both hitting and fielding.
Roki Sasaki has apparently narrowed it down to 3 teams:
Dodgers
Padres
Blue Jays
This will not be about money, as international signing rules prevent Sasaki from getting a Yamamoto-like payday at this point in his career.
I predict it will be the Padres. Why?
Blue Jays are in a tough division and could fail to make the postseason. Canada also has higher taxes.
Dodgers already have two Japanese stars in Ohtani and Yamamoto, and Sasaki may fear that his merchandising value will be lower if he's in the shadow of those two (especially Ohtani).
Padres are a contender, and Sasaki can make a name for himself there without being in the shadow of more popular Japanese players. Yu Darvish is on the Padres, but that's a plus for Sasaki. First, he has said that Darvish was whom he idolized while growing up. Second, Darvish will be 39 this year, and not likely to be a threat to steal Sasaki's notoriety. Instead, this will be more like passing the baton to the younger generation.
Padres also need Sasaki more than the Dodgers. San Diego has three good starters in Cease, King, and Darvish, but not much beyond that. Dodgers have an extremely crowded situation where Glasnow, Yamamoto, Ohtani, and Snell are guaranteed rotation spots (unless injured), and then Gonsolin, May, and maybe Kershaw will be vying for the last one (or last two if it's a six man rotation). Again, Sasaki may feel like he's nothing special when in a rotation with Snell/Glasnow/Yamamoto/Ohtani.
Sasaki to Dodgers.

I have signed a minor contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It was a very difficult decision, but I will do my best to make it the right decision when I look back after my baseball career.
I want to slip my sleeve on the Dodgers uniform at the opening conference, thanking everyone who has supported me this far.
Dodgers sign Tanner Scott $72 mill over 4 yrs.
heres my question with half the dodger season ticket holders hollowed out from the palisades can we keep this going? like yes gate fee doesnt pay all salaries but we were doing 3 million plus average attendance how much of that is just gone
I know there are a lot of people complaining about the Dodgers sucking up all the talent, and those are valid complaints.
There probably does need to be a salary cap, and one which takes into account deferred salaries.
One charming thing about the 2010s Dodgers teams was that, despite their lack of postseason success, at least their regular season dominance wasn't bought. They were mostly a product of in-house development and signing of reclamation projects which worked out (Max Muncy, Justin Turner, etc).
In the 2020s, it's more become a matter of, "Let's spend a ton of money and just keep picking up elite players."
Nice for fans like me, but also feels a bit unearned.
With that said, the Scott signing was a mistake. You should never invest big money in a reliever unless he's truly elite. Like a Mariano Rivera type.
Dodgers signed Kirby Yates pending a physical.
Are they trying to field two teams?
Justin Turner is still alive.
In MLB that is.
At the youthful age of 40, Justin has just signed with the Cubs, for 1 year, $6m. He's going to be the backup for another former Dodger, Mike Busch.
Turner was once a good defender, but those days are long gone. He can play 3B, but he probably won't very often, or at all. He's now going to be relegated to 1B, DH, and pinch hitting. It is possible Turner could get time at 3B if Matt Shaw's injury recovery doesn't progress as expected.
Turner still managed a .737 OPS last year, with a .259 average and 11 HR.
His body has lasted a bit longer than most because his career got a late start. He didn't see any real time in MLB until age 26 (2011), and then was only a part time player for the next 3 seasons, before going full time in 2015, at the age of 30.
He's 2 HR short of 200, and has a career average of .285.
Speaking of the Dodgers and Cubs, they will be playing at 12pm PST today.
That will be the first and only spring training game today, and then the rest start tomorrow.
Yoshi Yamamoto will draw the start for LA. He's considered the #1 starter this year, with Snell, Glasnow, Sasaki, and Gonsolin following. Dustin May, Clayton Kershaw (yes, he's back) are also options, and Shohei Ohtani will eventually make it to the mound as well. This year Ohtani will start off only hitting.
Offensively, the team will be very similar to the 2024 postseason edition, with only Michael Conforto and Hyesong Kim, both starters, being the new non-pitching faces.
Phillies starting a former Dodger for their opener against the Tigers on Saturday, Nabil Crismatt. He’s fighting for probably the one opening in the Bullpen, and there might not even be one spot if no one gets injured. He’s competing with Free Agent failure Taijuan Walker who lost his starting spot and is only still with the team because he’s owed $36 million over the next 2 years.
Make or break year for this high paid Phillies roster that is getting older.
Mark Prior must have felt DOGE sniffing around his job, and he got right to work. Michael Grove out for the year with shoulder surgery.
Currently 10 Dodger pitchers slated to open the season on IL.
There were ten in a bed and the little one said
"Roll over, roll over"
So they all rolled over and one fell out
Can you identify any tangible evidence Andrew Fraudman addressed their injury issue as he said he would in a late season press conference?
Answer: increased pitching salary budget
And now there are arguably 0 workhorse aces remaining. Cole out with TJ, after missing half of last year. Was pretty much down to him after Verlander got hurt a few years back.
There are aces without the injuries but not the track-record to be a workhorse (corbin burnes and anyone younger), and some workhorses who wouldn't quite be considered an ace of a quality staff (aaron nola, kevin gausman, jose berrios)
Who knows if there will be one again.
