I agree.

He should say something that if the truck works out in Mammoth, he will put X% of proceeds into a fund to pay people back -- maybe even one managed by a trusted third party in the community.

The "hey if you happen to come to this isolated ski town and have a balance, the meal's on me" solution is almost meaningless.
