i'm obv not qualified to suggest a therapy and i'm not even criticizing their decisions. i'm only saying that there may be more to the absurdly high suicide rate of trans people than the fact that they don't feel accepted in society.

just a hunch, but if someone believes they were born to the wrong gender (and especially if they go on to mutilate themselves accordingly), i'm guessing there is a decent chance they're dealing with some serious underlying mental issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, etc.)

There probably is some overlap of those conditions (confused gender and depression/anxiety) among the folks who self-select to change gender. But as someone who hasn't experienced being gender confused, how well qualified are you or others here to judge how much the experience of being gender-confused in a mostly intolerant society drives the depression/anxiety or accompanies it?

i’m obviously not qualified to determine the reasons why trans people have overwhelming mental heath issues (reflected by the fact that over 40% have attempted suicide in their lives, which is just mind blowing).

my point is that it is political correctness run amok to positively rule out the fact that trans people may be more prone to mental illness than the rest of the population generally, and for reasons other than their lack of acceptance or intolerance.

I don't think trans people are necessarily mentally ill, even if their gender dysphoria could technically be defined as a mental illness.

I get what you're saying, blake, and perhaps you have a point. Perhaps the gender dysphoria is just a symptom of a greater overall mental illness.

However, I still think the high suicide rate is due to the feeling that they never feel comfortable. Before the transition, they feel like they're in the wrong body. After the transition, they suffer from the problems I describe of non-acceptance. Just because you put on a dress, take hormones, and call yourself a woman doesn't mean that others will treat you like a woman.

Unfortunately the political correctness of today makes it unacceptable to tell someone, "Don't transition, you won't be able to pass as a female", so these guys go through with it and find themselves even more unhappy.

I would love to see the stats regarding suicide and overall depression between passing trans and non-passing trans.
