How do you even know you'll be able to get your precious gold if something exceptional happened ? Just like if the internet disappeared -> BTC disappears.. your gold can disappear. It has happened. What is so amusing to me is no one considers history and how currencies started out. They just say "oh volatility" then it justifies whatever view they originally had. I don't know anything about history when paper currencies were introduced, but I imagine people had WIDE variations in prices. Especially when currencies did not transition from a precious metal standard. I'd say look at Russia during Glasnost etc.... Why BTC should be a smooth transition to a valid currency is beyond me.

I see some clowns in here are like "Oh so if no one wanted to buy your bitcoin, then they'd be worth 0? thats magnificant!" Not realizing that this same thing can happen with any fiat currency. There is no guarantee that in a SHTF scenario (LOL) that anyone will want your paper currency.

I started out using the original bitcoin wallet. I once "exported" the wallet, which I thought was copy of the crypto keys needed to access the BTC. I later look at the .csv file and see it was nothing but recipient addresses I generated. WTF !? So now I have a crashed laptop that is worth about $1200 and I have to do data recovery if I want the BTC. So yea, BTC have problems. This volatility is fun to watch but sucks for guys like Micon, because who wants to buyin at a poker site when they feel the gaming chips are ready to be deflated 50%.

Never bought any BTC, and I mildly regret that today.

I was, however, gifted some (3) by a kind benefactor; I fucked around a bit and ran them up to 40BTC. Been sitting on these BTC for the last few months; kept most (34.51000000000BTC) at MtGox, and the other 5 split at Anonibet and SWC.

Today seemed like a good day to sell a few. A previously agreed upon selling price had been surpassed, so I put the order in @MtGox to sell 20BTC at current value sometime before noon, and signed off the internet. I was aware of the plummeting pricing throughout the day, as well as the recovery, but I couldn't sign into my account through my phone to find out if my coins sold. I figured that they hadn't, truly, and that I was SOL.

Got home around 6PM, and signed into my acct.

Whole thing strikes me as kind of odd, perhaps even some sort of market manipulation.

There are many ways to manipulate the MtGox market, and any organized attempt to do so could be highly successful and profitable. There's a lot of money in pulling this off, so it's not too far fetched to believe.

kidding aside, assuming someone could even prove bitcoin market manipulation, what legal exposure could the manipulator face for tweaking an unregulated crypto-currency? could criminal charges be brought against the guilty party? is there even civil liability? maybe fraud? I've put about five seconds worth of thought into this, and im leaning towards none of the above.

I am mainly pissed because you did something else like this recently. Sonatine started trolling me, then you use poor selective editing to make a new thread void of the original context. I have no use for selective editing like that. Just delete it, because otherwise you change things by removing context whether intentional or not. _THAT_ pisses me off. You have no interest in it, so don't try some completely half-assed editing attempt. Just delete the annoying troll posts.

One theory holds that people ddos Gox and other bitcoin market targets for a while, so people can't log in to their accounts or check markets or just get error after error, they see shit's not right, wait for the panicked sell-off, and buy up at cheaper prices. Price rebounds, coins sold off, rinse, repeat.
