first, the risk of war with russia is so minimal that it should be discounted entirely. i don’t care how angry russia gets, they know that an attack on america would lead to the end of their nation. putin may be a dictator, but he’s not crazy. also, the americans have missile defense systems that can take down nukes. russia doesn’t yet. our nato allies also have nukes. russia doesn’t really have allies period, at least not ones with military capabilities. mutually assured destruction plays.
on the tpp, even if you think hillary is a globalist by nature, there’s been so much attention brought to these trade deals now because of both bernie and trump, that hillary might feel she can’t possibly try to push it through (at least not in her first term). i really believe that bernie and elizabeth warren would hold her accountable for this. remember that hillary’s a lizard person, who will likely be guided by polls and not her personal convictions. if the public disfavors the tpp, expect it to not be adopted. even republicans, who historically favor these types of trade deals, would be hard-pressed to go along with them for fear of losing their house seats. no matter what you think of trump, he was very effective at directly tying global trade deals (which no one understands, myself included) with job loss. i think house republicans that approved any such deals would be voted out of office and they know it.
finally, since neither candidate will be able to accomplish that much with a divided congress, the one thing they can do is appoint supreme court justices. that makes this all about citizens united. if citizens united is overturned, that would cause a lot of money to get out of politics. the super pacs would be crippled. politicians would be less beholden to mega-corporate interests. a liberal supreme court would be far more likely to overturn citizens united than a conservative one. note that citizens united was decided along party lines, 5-4, with the republicans winning. it won’t completely get money out of politics — not by a long shot — but it’s a good start.
