According to this Reuters article it appears Russia is actually saying it is ok for Europe to pay Russian banks for the gas in Euros and Dollars, and then the Russian bank will do the conversion back into ruble themselves. And the EU Commission is exploring whether this is legally acceptable on their end given current sanctions. So it looks like Russia is actually the one backing down.
