I have Tax Help For Gamblers, authored by professional gambler Jean Scott and gambling tax professional, Marissa Chien. The 4th Edition also has another noted gambling tax professional, Russel Fox. Kindle cost $10.

Other than the 1 year session being ruled out, no other lengths of time have been ruled out by the IRS. It's up to the gambler to define what their session is. There are no rulings by the IRS on using a 1 day session or multi-day session. It would probably behoove the gambler to stretch out the session length as long as possible. Here's an example for a poker player:

He plays a day session and wins $600, quits for a few hours then goes back and plays a night session where he loses $300.

Winning and losing gambling sessions are recorded in different columns in the log book. So he enters $600 in Column A, and $300 in Column B. A net of $300 for the day. He can write off only $270 for Column B which means he pays tax on $330 instead of $300.

But if he had used 1 day as a session there would be just 1 entry for the day in the log book, and that would be in Column A, a net win of $300 and he would pay tax on just $300.

I can see tournament poker players pushing the envelope on session lengths which I will explain in another post.

back when i was worried about such things i researched this, in a general sense - tax opinions are the nut low - anyway, i came to the conclusion that i would be able to argue with a straight face that my 3-7 trips were 1 session as they really didn't start or stop, but was instead one long degenerate session. anyway, that is how i did it and was never challenged. basically from the time i landed in lvs with a definitive amount of cash/credit to the time i took back off when i actually counted up my w/l. anything less than this could reach the absurd - is every spin not arguably a session? from there the next logical argument would simply be a 24 hour day. but they don't really start or stop there. anyway, this was how i handled it and was never questioned.


a little ot - there is a reasonable argument that when a player is getting a lot of comps - usually from a lot of trips -- that the value of these things should be counted as income, and subject to written off against any losses...

I saw this only once on a poker site. Bowman's Poker in the mid-2000s, based out of Mauritius, was a skin of the now-defunct Boss Media Network. It was the softest site I ever played on, and that's saying a lot.

My buddy "Good Eats" and I (second time I've mentioned him in 2 days, oddly) swore to each other to keep it a secret from other pros.

Every month they posted a leaderboard with initials for biggest winners. Every single month of 2005, it was "TW" and his initials as #1 and #2, though we often traded spots. The #3 guy was an unknown dude from Florida who I later met at Bellagio, and funny enough I played with him again this April, as we were both in town at the same time.

Anyway, it felt damn good to seem my initials on the leaderboard, even though obviously it wasn't going to lead to any public accolades.


There was a huge grinder at the time who would have sat at those tables 24/7 who we especially didn't want to find out. Some of you might remember him -- SlmSimmy on Pokerstars. We especially wanted to keep it secret from him. 19 years later, in 2024, I was at dinner in Vegas, ran into him, and we talked for awhile. I finally told him about the site and how we kept it secret from him. He laughed and said we did the right thing.

The gambling part isn't going to make much of a dent in his base. It's a niche community. Lots of people gamble, but only a small percentage of those pay much attention to poker/gambling/sportsbetting Twitter.

I suppose it could matter if the media latches onto this and puts out scare stories that there's a cap on losses you can claim against winnings (which there isn't, but lots of people erroneously believe).
