This was inevitable.
Elon is an autist with a good head for business and innovation, but no social skills, and the drive to have a cold pursuit for profit, influence, and success.
Elon realized some years ago that being a moderate liberal or apolitical wasn't beneficial to him. He figured out there was a huge, untapped market in being a hero to the right. He knew he couldn't be a hero to the left, because eventually he'd run into the AOC/Warren/Bernie types who rail against his riches and corporate benefits.
When he set out to buy Twitter, it wasn't to save American free speech. It was a business move -- a smart one! He vastly overpaid for it, but eventually it became clear that he wasn't buying Twitter as a business -- he was buying it as a gigantic mouthpiece and influence generator.
Recall that he didn't immediately back Trump. Initially he was a DeSantis guy. This also was calculated. Trump seemed to have questionable prospects for 2024 given the January 6 stuff dogging him, and DeSantis had growing popularity. Additionally, DeSantis would be easier for Elon to deal with, as he wasn't as emotional or unpredictable as Trump.
Elon held the gigantic Twitter Spaces campaign launch for DeSantis, and it failed dramatically due to technical difficulties. This not only sent DeSantis on a tremendous political decline from which he never fully recovered, but also caused a little rift between the two men. Seeing Trump was going to be the candidate after all, Elon quickly pivoted to him, and we were off to the races.
Twitter/X had a huge influence on the election. Part of the influence was simply a reversal of what had been occurring in prior years, where the previous ownership favored (and colluded for) Obama/Hillary/Biden, and now the very visible current ownership was putting out pro-Trump propaganda several times per day. Twitter helped amplify the follies and failures of Biden, Harris, and the Dems, and Trump won fairly easily. The election would have been much closer -- and perhaps not a Trump win at all -- had Elon not bought the site.
There was a deal the entire way that Trump would reward Elon on the back end for what he did. Unfortunately, Trump was hoping to do some token things for Elon and shove him to the background, while Elon felt that this earned him the right to be Trump's right hand man. Elon wanted increasingly favorable treatment for his businesses, and it was just a matter of time before it all blew up. Elon felt he was owed more than Trump was ever going to give him.
Given Elon's personality, he wasn't going to walk away quietly once he knew it was all over. He came to realize this over the past week, and despite Trump delicately handling the situation, Elon eventually exploded. Totally expected.
I was just told on CNN that there is no evidence of wrongdoing by Trump on Pedo Island. Of course, they also told us Joe Biden wasn’t a vegetable.

I agree he would have lost anyway, even if not for the failed Spaces. In fact, the Spaces thing was Elon's fault, not DeSantis', but it gave a perfect opening for MAGA to clown on him.
It remains to be seen if DeSantis has another chance down the line, once the MAGA movement dies out or fades. He's not even 50 yet, so he has time.
Elon is now posting a lot of old Trump tweets to show how much Trump is presently contradicting himself.
A few comments here:
1) This is intellectually dishonest. Elon knew what Trump was when he partnered with him. Trump treats you like the best and most important person in the world when you're on his side, and like a worthless piece of shit when you're against him.
2) Elon is coming off like a jilted ex-girlfriend who is reposting old tweets from her ex-boyfriend showing that he once loved her. Not a good look.
3) Trump and Elon both need to re-read the old kids' story of "The Scorpion and the Frog". In that story, the frog allows the scorpion to ride on his back to cross the river, then stings the frog, who can no longer move and they both start to sink. When the frog asks, "Why would you do this? Now we're both going to die!", the scorpion responds, "It's in my nature." In this case, both Elon and Trump were the scorpion, and stung each other. Now Trump is wondering why Elon is tilting his face off at him, and Elon is wondering why Trump kicked him to the curb in the first place. In both cases, it was in their nature.
