It's a lot easier to skip town and attempt to disappear when faced with a criminal charge, if you are basically running away from zero assets.
Cash bail ensures that you have some skin in the game, and makes you less likely to skip.
I understand how this disproportionately hurts poor people, but there's simply no perfect solution to this. I would be for a cashless bail system for minor, nonviolent crimes. However, even when this has been tried, it has failed, because the left starts to pervert what the term "nonviolent" means, and violent criminals start getting let out of jail hours after they commit their crimes, with zero bail.
NYC attempted cashless bail starting November 2019, and it's been a fiasco. In one case, a crazy anti-Semitic woman was beating up random Orthodox Jewish women on the streets. She was arrested, released via the cashless bail system, and went right back out to beat up more random Jewish women. Total fail.
Cashless bail is one of those things which seems to make sense until you really think about it.
But yes, Kamala said she wants cashless bail throughout the US, which would be awful.
